虱焦螟細蠛兎毫之端不能摸之何以肖

侍毉栗本法眼出一帖而請余一言焉閲之則所自画
千蟲冩真之圖也形容細密接色鮮明實逼其真焉法
眼固能辨別藥品物産而其餘好分解花卉鳥獣魚龞
諸類矣蓋今而及此撰亦復毉業之一技也余甞好冩
品物也久矣然好之者不如《見せ消ち：藥｜#3》之者彼法眼者非好之
者而可謂樂之者也已抑所竭力於奉職委心於仁術
者非此序之所得盡也
　時文化甲戌秌八月甲子肥前守従五位下
　藤原朝臣義行述竝書

現代語訳

【右丁】
車のような蜈蚣、龍と闘う蜘蛛、帆のような蝶、牛のような螻蛄など、
尺幅の帖にも収めることができない。その小さなものは浮塵や砂虱、焦螟、細蠛など、兎毫の筆先でも描くことができない。どのようにして生き生きとした姿を描き、
色を施すことができようか」と。瑞見は笑って言った。「ただ見るままに任せてこれを図にし、積み重ねて
五帖に及んだ。願わくはこの帖を決定版として、続々とその不足を補いたい」と。私は
まことにその言葉を記し、ついに序文とした次第である。

侍医栗本法眼が一帖を出して私に一言を請うた。これを閲覧すると、自ら画いた
千虫写真の図であった。形容は細密で、色彩は鮮明、実に真に迫っている。法眼は
もとより薬品物産を弁別することができ、その他花卉・鳥獣・魚虫などの
諸類を好んで分解研究している。けだし今この撰述に及ぶのも、また医業の一技である。私はかつて
品物を写すことを好んできた。しかし好む者は楽しむ者に如かない。かの法眼は好む
者ではなく、楽しむ者と言うべきである。そもそも職務に全力を尽くし、仁術に心を委ねる
ことは、この序文では尽くしきれないところである。
　時に文化甲戌秋八月甲子、肥前守従五位下
　藤原朝臣義行述並びに書

centipedes like carriages, spiders that battle dragons, butterflies like sails, mole crickets like oxen -
even a scroll of one shaku width cannot contain them. The smallest ones - floating dust, sand lice, tiny midges, fine gnats - cannot be drawn even with the tip of a rabbit-hair brush. How can one depict their
lifelike forms and apply colors?" Zuiken laughed and said: "I simply draw them as I see them, accumulating them
to reach five fascicles. I hope to make this fascicle definitive and continuously supplement what is lacking." I
truly recorded his words and made them into this preface.

Court Physician Kurimoto Hōgen brought out one fascicle and requested a few words from me. Upon examining it, I found it to be
illustrations of a thousand insects drawn from life by his own hand. The forms are meticulously detailed, the colors vivid and bright, truly approaching reality. The Hōgen
has always been able to distinguish medicinal substances and natural products, and additionally enjoys analyzing and studying various
types of flowers, birds, beasts, and fish-insects. Indeed, his reaching this present compilation is also one technique of medical practice. I have long
enjoyed depicting natural objects. However, those who merely like something cannot compare to those who take pleasure in it. That Hōgen is not one who merely likes
this work, but rather one who truly delights in it. Moreover, his wholehearted devotion to official duties and commitment to the healing arts
cannot be fully expressed in this preface.
