寛《見せ消ち：永｜・#1》甲寅《割書：瑞見｜》辱奉
台命講本艸於毉學兼鍳訂藥物十八年于茲多
識鳥獣草《振り仮名：◦｜#2》之名雖然世々不乏其人著書行于世
者可汗百牛也至集彙蟲類者寥々無聞焉豈不
缼典乎公私之暇以此為念毎獲一蟲樊以養之
手自冩真彙類附説亦十八年于今圖説遂盈巾
衍因𨤲為二帖其靣背皆蟲一一附説可至千數
同好之士講蟲部者據此圖説則未必無小補云
　文化八歳次辛未冬日　栗本瑞見昌臧誌

もろこしのいにしへ文宣王のおほく鳥獣草木
の名をしると仰られしは■【拵ヵ】へあることなるへし
こゝに栗本法眼はくすしのわさはさらなり
本艸の学にもさとりふかく寛政きのへとら
のとしより　台命をうけ玉はりて医学館
にしてかの書を講しかねて薬の品々を見さた
めらるゝこと年久しかたはらゑにさへうつ
して家につたへたまふことゝなりぬ此千《見せ消ち：■｜#3》の
むしのゑすなはちそのうちの一つなり年月
のつとめのおほろけならさることは見舞
人をしはかりしるへしわきて詩疏の蜮

再題自画蟲譜
寛政甲寅年（瑞見）、恐縮ながら
台命を奉り医学館において本草学を講義し、兼ねて薬物の鑑定・校訂を行うこと十八年がここに至る。多く
鳥獣草木の名を識別できるようになった。しかしながら、世々その人に乏しくないとはいえ、著書を世に行わせる
者は汗牛充棟というほど多い。しかし蟲類を集成した者については、寥々として聞くところがない。
典籍の欠缺と言えるのではないか。公私の暇にこのことを念じ、一蟲を獲得するたびに檻に入れて養い、
手ずから写真を描き、類別して説明を附すこと、また十八年。今に至って図説がついに
巾箱に満ちたため、これを編纂して二帖とした。その表裏すべてに蟲を描き、一一に説明を附して千数に至る。
同好の士で蟲部を講究する者は、この図説に拠れば必ずしも小さな補益なきにしもあらずと云う。

中国の古の文宣王（孔子）が多く鳥獣草木
の名を知ると仰せられたのは、まことに優れたことであろう。
ここに栗本法眼は医師の業はもちろんのこと、
本草学にも悟りが深く、寛政きのえとら
の年より台命をお受けになって、医学館
においてかの書を講じ、兼ねて薬の品々を見定め
られること年久しい。かたわらの絵にさえ写し
て家に伝えられることとなった。この千
蟲の絵図はすなわちその中の一つである。年月の
努めがおろそかでないことは、見舞う
人をして推し量り知らしめよう。わけても詩疏の蜮

Second Preface to Self-Painted Insect Compendium
In Kansei Year of the Wood Tiger (1794), I (Zuiken) was honored to receive
imperial command to lecture on materia medica at the Medical Academy and concurrently authenticate and collate medicinal substances. Eighteen years have passed since then, and I have come to
identify the names of many birds, beasts, grasses, and trees. Although there is no lack of such people in each generation, and those who publish books in the world
are numerous enough to make oxen sweat from carrying them, when it comes to those who have compiled insect categories, there are very few to be heard of.
Is this not a lacuna in our literature? During my leisure from public and private duties, I have kept this in mind. Each time I obtained an insect, I caged and raised it,
personally drew it from life, categorized it and added explanations - this too for eighteen years. Now the illustrated explanations have finally filled my
document box, so I have compiled them into two fascicles. Both front and back pages contain insects, each with explanations attached, reaching a thousand in number.
Fellow enthusiasts who study entomology may find this illustrated compendium not without some small benefit.

In ancient China, when King Bunsen (Confucius) was said to know the names of many birds, beasts, grasses, and trees,
this was indeed an admirable thing.
Here, Hōgen Kurimoto not only excels in the physician's craft but also
has deep understanding of materia medica. Since the Year of Wood Tiger of Kansei,
having received imperial command, at the Medical Academy
he has lectured on those books and concurrently examined and determined
various medicinal substances for many years. Even the paintings he made as side work
have been preserved to pass down in his house. These thousand
insect illustrations are indeed one part of that work. That his years of
dedication have not been negligent can be understood by those who
observe him. Particularly the yu-monster from the Book of Songs...
