【右丁】
鈴虫によく似た虫　背が平たく脇に稜線をなす　丁丑九月六日写
　頭は細く嘴（くちばし）は長く下へ曲がり鉤のようで二本の短い触角がある。全身土黒色でつやがなく、腹は黒褐色、羽は小さく畳んで背に負っている。足は淡褐色で黒い斑点があり、前足は黒く、付け際は至って細く急に膨れ、また先端は至って細い。

【左丁】
軍配虫　俗にグンバイという。軍配団扇の形状に似るため、この名前を付けた。甲戌年仲夏下旬　西城より御尋ねがあり、略図を描いて返上した時にこの名前を申し上げた。漢名はない。
　全体が透き通っていて雲母片のようである。翼は筋がみな六角形で亀甲文様をなしている。頭部下の小羽が上の方に向かって縦に出ている。写実的に描いても、極めて緻密な部分は描き難い。
　夏秋の頃まれに見る一小虫で、その形は胡麻粒より小さい。顕微鏡で観察すると、その頸部に三方向に小羽が出て、紗帽子を被るようである。白い斑の部分は白い網目のような細い文様脈で亀甲門文をなしている。まことに奇妙な造形で筆力の及ばないものである。その形の大概をここに手写するという。

Insect closely resembling a bell cricket. Back is flat with ridges on the sides. Drawn on the 6th day of the 9th month, year of Hinoto-Ushi (1817).
　The head is narrow with a long beak curving downward like a hook, and has two short antennae. The entire body is earth-black in color without luster, the abdomen is blackish-brown, and the wings are small, folded and carried on the back. The legs are pale brown with black spots; the front legs are black, extremely narrow at the joints then suddenly swelling, and extremely narrow again at the tips.

Military fan bug (Gunbai-mushi). Commonly called "gunbai." Named thus because it resembles the shape of a military fan. Late second summer month of the year Kinoe-Inu (1814). When the Western Castle made an inquiry and I drew a sketch in response, I submitted this name. There is no Chinese name.
　The entire body is translucent like a sheet of mica. The wing veins are all hexagonal, forming a tortoiseshell pattern. Small wing-like projections below the head extend vertically upward. Although drawn realistically, the extremely intricate details are difficult to depict.
　A rare small insect of summer and autumn, smaller in form than a sesame seed. When observed through a microscope, small wing-like projections extend in three directions from the neck, appearing as if wearing a gauze cap. The white spotted areas form tortoiseshell gate patterns with fine vein-like markings resembling white mesh. Truly a wondrous creation beyond the reach of artistic skill. I record here the general outline of its form.
