【右丁】
鈴虫によく似た虫　背が平らで脇に稜（角）をなす　丁丑年九月六日写

頭は細く、嘴は長くて下方に曲がり、鉤のようである。二本の短い触角がある。全身が土黒色でつやがなく、腹は黒褐色。羽は小さく畳んで背に負うように折りたたまれている。足は淡褐色で黒い斑点がある。前足は黒く、付け際は非常に細く、急に膨らみ、また先端に向かって細くなる。

【左丁】
軍配虫（グンバイムシ）　俗にグンバイと言う。軍配団扇の形に似ているため、この名を付けた。甲戌年仲夏下澣（六月下旬）、西城より御尋ねがあったため、略図を添えて返上した折に、この名を申し上げた。漢名なし。

全体が透き通っており、雲母片のようである。翅の筋はすべて六角形の亀甲模様をなしている。頂部下の小羽は上の方へ向かって縦に出ている。写し取ろうとはするが、精緻を極めた部分は描き難い。

夏と秋の間に稀に見られる小さな羽虫で、その形は胡麻粒より小さい。顕微鏡で照らして観察すると、その頸の三方から小羽が出ており、紗の帽子を戴いているかのようである。白斑の部分は白い網目のような細かい脈紋が亀甲門文（亀甲模様）をなしている。まことに奇巧であり、筆力の及ばないものである。その形の大概をここに手写すと言う。

（朱書き）盆栽用の蓮の巻き葉および茎に付く油虫（アブラムシ）である。大きさは荏子（エゴマの種）ほどある。虫目鏡（顕微鏡）をもって写す。

An insect closely resembling a *suzumushi* (bell cricket). The back is flat and forms ridges on the sides. Copied on the 6th day of the 9th month, Ding-Chou year.

The head is narrow, and the beak is long, curved downward like a hook, with two short antennae. The entire body is dull earth-black in color with no luster, and the abdomen is dark brownish-black. The wings are small and folded, carried on the back. The legs are light brown with black spots. The front legs are black, extremely thin at the base, then suddenly swelling, and tapering again toward the tips.

*Gunbai-mushi* (军配虫; Fan-shaped Bug). Commonly called *gunbai* [military fan]. Named so because of its resemblance to a *gunbai uchiwa* (a war fan used by military commanders). During the latter part of mid-summer in the Kō-jutsu year, upon inquiry from the Western Citadel, this name was submitted along with a rough sketch in reply. No Chinese name exists.

The entire body is transparent like flakes of mica. All the veins of the wings form hexagonal tortoiseshell patterns. The small wings below the top project vertically upward. Although I have attempted to copy it faithfully, the most intricate and detailed portions are exceedingly difficult to render in a drawing.

It is a rare small winged insect appearing between summer and autumn, smaller in form than a sesame seed. When observed under a microscope, small wings emerge in three directions from its neck, as if it were wearing a gauze cap. The white-spotted areas form fine vein patterns resembling a white mesh, creating a tortoiseshell (*kikkou*) pattern. It is truly a marvel of nature, beyond what brush and ink can fully capture. I have here attempted a rough hand-copy of its general form.

(In vermilion ink) This is an aphid (*aburамushi*) that clings to the rolled leaves and stems of lotus plants cultivated in ornamental pots. Its size is approximately that of a perilla (*egoma*) seed. Copied using a microscope.
