不肖《割書：臣純政｜》謹テ書ヲ
執政各位ノ左右ニ呈ス《割書：純｜》稟性頑愚固ヨリ国家ノ形
勢ヲ熟察セス固陋ノ鄙見ヲ以テ妄ニ建議仕候儀越
俎ノ罪軽カラス恐惧之至ニ候得共椆衆中非常之
抜擢ヲ蒙リ貢士公用之大任 命セラレ其上過分
之秩禄下シ賜ハリ以テ今日ニ至リ候段
君恩之渥キ筆舌難尽候是ヲ感載スル至深ナシ
ハ是ヲ報セン事ヲ思フモ亦至切ナシ《割書：純｜》不肖ト雖トモ一日其
職ニ居レハ則チ一日之責アリ義黙々トシテ而可無言哉
今夫千里ノ馬ヲ求メント欲スル当ニ其死骨ヲ捨テス千秋

不肖臣純政、謹んで書を
執政各位の左右に呈します。生来の性質が頑固で愚かであり、もとより国家の形
勢を十分に察することができず、狭い見識をもって妄りに建議申し上げる儀は、
越俎の罪軽からず、恐れ入る至りでございますが、衆人の中から非常な
抜擢を受け、貢士公用の大任を命じられ、その上過分な
秩禄を下し賜り、今日に至った次第は、
君恩の厚さは筆舌に尽くし難く、これを感謝する気持ちは至って深く、
これに報いることを思う気持ちもまた至って切実です。不肖とはいえ、一日その
職にあれば則ち一日の責任があり、黙々として無言でいてよいものでしょうか。
今、千里の馬を求めようと欲するならば、まさにその死骨を捨ててはならず、千秋

I, the unworthy retainer Sumimasa, respectfully present this letter
to Your Excellencies of the administration. Being by nature obstinate and foolish, and naturally unable to thoroughly understand the circumstances of the nation, to presumptuously submit suggestions with my narrow and provincial views is a transgression that cannot be taken lightly, and I am extremely fearful. However, having received extraordinary promotion from among the masses and being commanded to undertake the great responsibility of tribute scholar and public affairs, and furthermore being granted excessive stipends that have sustained me to this day—such profound imperial benevolence is beyond the power of words to express. My gratitude is extremely deep, and my desire to repay this kindness is equally urgent. Though unworthy, if I occupy this position for one day, then I have one day's responsibility.
