道の教訓（きやうくん）を仕しを今 更（さら）の様（やう）に存じ出し候也
いづれ人の将（まさ）に死（し）せんとする時（とき）其言（そのいふ）事 実（まこと）あり
と承（うけたまは）り及候へとももとより賎（いや）しき土民（どみん）多言（たげん）
かへつて素性（すじやう）をあらはし恥（はぢ）をや受（うけ）候はん一 刻（こく）
もはやく御 手（て）にかけられ我（わ）が霊魂（れいこん）を心見
させ給ふべしと座（ざ）に着（つき）てゑりさしのべ目を
ふさぎ観念（くはんねん）したる有様 誠（まこと）に神共なりぬべき
頬魂（つらたましゐ）いといさぎよき見えけるにぞ御心もいさま
しく御はかせぬきはなし首（くび）水もたまらずうち
落（をと）し神心（しんしん）乱（みだ）すべからず魂魄（こんはく）此 土（ど）をはなるべ

からずと高らかにの給ふ御 声（こゑ）に従（したが）ひて彼（かの）首目を
ひらき口をうごかしぬそれより死骸（しがい）を其所に埋（うづ）み
社をたて速霊神（そくれいしん）と祭（まつ）りなし給ひ両人の男子
を御 約諾（やくだく）のごとく五百石づゝ給り客（きやく）挌（がく）に召出し
妻（さい）并（ならび）に女子も一生 合力（かうりよく）給（たま）はりぬ然（しか）しより後此
霊神（れいしん）へ祈（いの）る所病 苦（く） 厄難（やくなん）こと〴〵くはらひいか
なる願ひも其 霊験（れいげん）のいちじるきこと数（かず）しれず昔
より霊神あまた有といへともまのあたりかゝることは
いとありかたき事になんとそ
　　此事はわらはか親のしたしき士かたり給ひぬ国

現代語訳

道の教訓をしてくれたことを、今更のように思い出しております。いずれにしても、人が死のうとする時、その言うことには真実があると承っておりますが、もとより卑しい土民で多言を弄すれば、かえって素性を現して恥を受けるでしょう。一刻も早く御手にかけられ、我が霊魂をご覧になってください」と座に着いて襟を差し伸べ、目を閉じて観念した様子は、誠に神ともなるべき魂で、いと潔く見えたので、御心も勇ましく御刀を抜き放ち、首を一刀のもとに打ち落とした。「神心を乱すべからず、魂魄はこの土地を離れるべからず」と高らかにおっしゃる御声に従って、かの首は目を開き口を動かした。それより死骸をその所に埋め、社を建て速霊神として祭りなさった。両人の男子を御約束の通り五百石ずつ給わり客分格に召し出し、妻並びに女子も一生合力を賜った。それ以後、この霊神へ祈る所、病苦・厄難ことごとく祓い、いかなる願いもその霊験の著しいこと数知れず。昔より霊神は数多あるといえども、間近にこのようなことは、いと有り難いことであった。

"I now recall, as if anew, the moral teachings she gave me. In any case, I have heard that when a person is about to die, there is truth in what they say. However, being originally a lowly commoner, if I speak too much, I might instead reveal my humble origins and receive shame. Please kill me with your own hands as quickly as possible and witness my soul." He sat down, extended his collar, closed his eyes, and resigned himself to his fate. His appearance was truly that of a soul that could become a deity, appearing most noble and pure. The lord's heart grew bold, and he drew his sword and struck off the head in one swift blow. Following the lord's loud proclamation "Do not disturb the divine heart, the soul must not leave this land," the severed head opened its eyes and moved its mouth. Thereafter, the corpse was buried in that place, a shrine was built, and it was enshrined as Sokurei-shin (Swift Spirit Deity). The two sons were granted 500 koku each as promised and summoned as guest retainers, while the wife and daughter also received lifelong support. From then on, all who prayed to this deity found their illnesses, sufferings, and misfortunes completely purified, and the miraculous efficacy of any wish made was beyond counting. Though there have been many spiritual deities since ancient times, to witness such things so closely was truly a rare and precious occurrence.
