　　　相模国地蔵 尊（そん）霊験（れいげん）の事

ならず昔（むかし）より継（まゝ）しき中は高き賎（いや）しきによらず隔（へだて）
あるものにて継子（まゝこ）成人の後（のち）はかならず憤（いきどふ）る事出来
果（はて）は浮名（うきな）の山をなしうたてしき事あまた聞見し
ゆへぞかしそこもとにいかなるあやまち有ともわれは
堪（たへ）忍（しの）ぶべし只（ただ）此子を恵（めぐみ）深（ふか）く生（をひ）ふしたてゝたまへ
其（そこ）をむかゆるも外の事にあらず此子養育（ようゐく）の為也と
くれ〳〵と頼むにぞ女も心よくいらへて夫婦 睦（むつま）じく
女は夫（おつと）の心に違（たが）はじと市松をねんごろにはごく

司の名も又祭りなした神の名も確かに聞いたが記さない。

相模国地蔵尊霊験の事
三界無安、猶火宅の如し、誠なるかな如来の金言。相模国大住郡に松兵衛という土民がいた。生まれつき律義な者で、貧しいことを嫌わず、肘を曲げて枕とすることを楽しみ、世にへつらわず、夫婦同じ心で農業に励み、男子一人を持ち、名を市松と呼んで寵愛していた。

ところがこの子が三歳の時、母が亡くなった。松兵衛が男やもめの袖で幼子を養育するのを、人々が哀れんで、同郡から仲人して適当な後妻を迎えさせた。松兵衛は妻に向かって「私は他の妻を重ねまいと固く約束したのは他でもない。昔から継母と継子の仲は、身分の高い低いに関わらず隔てがあるもので、継子が成人した後は必ず憤ることが起こり、果ては浮名の山をなし、嫌なことを数多聞き見したゆえである。そなたにいかなる過ちがあっても私は堪え忍ぼう。ただこの子を恵み深く育て上げてくれ。そなたを迎えるのも他の事ではない。この子の養育のためなのだ」と繰り返し頼んだところ、女も快く答えて夫婦睦まじく、女は夫の心に背くまいと市松を懇ろに育てれば、この子もよく馴れ慕って、ひとえに実母の思いで...

"The three realms are without peace, like a burning house" - truly these are the golden words of the Tathagata. In Ōsumi District of Sagami Province, there lived a commoner named Matsuhē. He was naturally righteous in character, did not despise poverty, took pleasure in bending his arm as a pillow, did not flatter the world, and together with his wife worked diligently at farming with one heart. They had one son whom they called Ichimatsu and loved dearly.

However, when this child was three years old, his mother died. As Matsuhē was raising the young child alone as a widower, people took pity on him, and through a matchmaker from the same district, they had him take a suitable second wife. Matsuhē said to his new wife: "I firmly promised not to take another wife, and this was for no other reason than this: since ancient times, the relationship between stepmothers and stepchildren has had barriers regardless of high or low social status. After stepchildren reach adulthood, anger inevitably arises, ultimately creating mountains of bad reputation, and I have heard and seen many unpleasant things. No matter what mistakes you may make, I will endure and bear them. Just please raise this child with deep compassion. My reason for welcoming you is nothing else - it is for the sake of raising this child." He pleaded this repeatedly. The woman also answered willingly, and the couple lived harmoniously.
