【陣を張る秀郷】
そうこうしているうちに、秀郷と貞盛が合体して相馬の将門を攻撃するという知らせが聞こえてきたので、当国（下野国）は言うまでもなく、常陸、奥州、武蔵、相模、甲斐、信濃、越後、上野の武士たちが、あるいは千騎、あるいは二千騎で、我も我もと馳せ集まり、正月二十八日の着到で、都合五万三千余騎となった。

Meanwhile, word spread that Hidesato and Sadamori had joined forces to attack Masakado of Soma. Upon hearing this news, warriors from not only the local province (Shimotsuke) but also from Hitachi, Oshu, Musashi, Sagami, Kai, Shinano, Echigo, and Kozuke came rushing to join them, some bringing a thousand horsemen, others two thousand. By the time of the muster on the twenty-eighth day of the first month, they had assembled a total force of fifty-three thousand mounted warriors.
