その日は戦いが暮れて、引き分けとなった。丑の刻（午前2時頃）から大雨が車軸を流すように降り、翌日も依然として止まなかったので、両軍とも軍使を立てて戦いを休み、雨が晴れるのを待っていた。その夜、将頼の陣中で手違いがあって役所の建物に火が燃え出した。折悪しく東風が激しく、炎が四方に吹き飛ばされたので、「さあ夜討ちだ」と騒ぎ立てて味方同士で戦いを始めてしまった。秀郷・貞盛はこれを見て「敵方に内通者がいるに違いない。今こそ鬨の声を合わせて攻めかかれ」と下知したので、敵はますます動揺して度を失った。

That day, the battle ended at nightfall in a draw. From around the Hour of the Ox (about 2 AM), heavy rain fell as if washing away cart axles, and since it still had not stopped the next day, both armies sent military envoys to suspend the fighting and waited for the rain to clear. That night, there was an accident in Masayori's camp and a fire broke out in the administrative building. Unfortunately, the east wind was fierce, and the flames were blown in all directions. Thinking "Now comes the night attack!" they raised an uproar and began fighting among themselves. Seeing this, Hidesato and Sadamori said, "There must be a spy among the enemy forces. Now is the time to raise our war cries together and charge!" Following this command, the enemy became even more confused and lost their composure.
