敵が動揺するのを見て、城門を押し開き、一斉にどっと切って出ると、秀郷と貞盛は心は勇猛であるとはいえ、この勢いに対抗することができず、混乱して退却した。将門の大将である権の守興世が手勢を率いて八方に切り回ったので、攻撃軍はますます乱れ騒ぎ、右往左往に逃げ散って、貞盛・秀郷もすでに討たれそうに見えたが、ようやく切り抜けて一里余り退いて陣を取り、敗軍を集めたところ、落ち残った兵士は一万人に足りなかった。

Seeing the enemy waver, they pushed open the castle gates and charged out all at once with a great roar. Though Hidesato and Sadamori were brave at heart, they could not withstand this fierce assault and retreated in confusion. Masakado's general, Gon-no-kami Okiyo, led his troops and cut through in all directions, causing the attacking army to fall into even greater disorder and chaos. They fled in all directions, and it appeared that Sadamori and Hidesato themselves were about to be killed, but they barely managed to break through. They retreated more than one ri and established a camp, gathering their defeated forces, but the surviving soldiers numbered fewer than ten thousand.
