く東（ひかし）の門（もん）を

我先にと落ちていく将門と、従類二百余人は鉾先を揃えて防戦したものの、火勢が盛んで黒煙が目を塞ぎ、今はどうしようもなく東の門を開いて落ちていった。この時、諸方の寄手が一度に攻め寄せていれば将門も討たれたであろうに、宵の敗軍でちりぢりになってしまい、合流できなかった。

At this time, if the attacking forces from all directions had pressed their attack simultaneously, Masakado would likely have been killed, but because they had been scattered by the evening's defeat, they could not coordinate their assault.
