将門が勢（せい）次第（しだい）〳〵に落失（おちうせ）
あるひは降人（こうにん）に出（いで）ければ
今（いま）ははや将門が運命（うんめい）も
さばかりたもたじと覚（おぼ）
えける文屋（ぶんや）好兼（よしかね）といふ
ものかためゐたる濵（はま）の手（て）
より軍（いくさ）破（やぶ）れて貞盛（さたもり）が
軍勢（くんせい）乱（みだ）れ入りさしも
いみしく建續（たてつゝき）
たる相馬（そうま）の
大裏（たいり）に火（ひ）を掛（かけ）
たれば猛火（めうくは）天地（てんち）
を掠（かす）め黒（くろ）けむり

【将門の相馬の内裏に火をかけた貞盛軍】
将門の勢力は次第に衰え、ある者は落ち延び、ある者は降伏して出てきたので、今はもう将門の運命も長くは続かないだろうと思われた。文屋好兼という者が守っていた浜の砦から軍が破られて、貞盛の軍勢が乱れ入り、あれほど立派に建て続けられていた相馬の大内裏に火をかけたところ、激しい火が天地を覆い、黒い煙が東西を覆い隠し、金銀をちりばめた宮殿や楼閣が燃え上がった。

【Sadamori's Army Sets Fire to Masakado's Palace at Soma】
Masakado's forces gradually declined, with some fleeing and others surrendering, so it seemed that Masakado's fate would not last much longer. When the military position at the beach defended by a man called Bunya Yoshikane was broken through, Sadamori's army rushed in chaotically and set fire to the great imperial palace at Soma that had been so magnificently constructed. Fierce flames swept across heaven and earth, black smoke covered east and west, and the palace halls and towers decorated with gold and silver burst into flames.
