【牡鹿に向かおうとする武者の図】
六十一代朱雀帝と申し上げるのは、醍醐天皇の第十一皇子で、延長八年十一月、御年八歳で御即位され、年号を承平と改元された。その二年目の秋、清涼殿の築山にどこからともなく牡鹿一匹が躍り出て、天皇の御身体に飛びかかった。殿上人たちは慌て騒ぎ、我も我もと太刀を抜いた。

The sixty-first emperor, known as Emperor Suzaku, was the eleventh prince of Emperor Daigo. In the eighth year of Enchō, in the eleventh month, at the age of eight, he ascended to the throne and changed the era name to Jōhei. In the autumn of the second year of that era, a male deer suddenly leaped out from nowhere in the artificial hill garden of the Seiryōden (Imperial Palace), and jumped toward the Emperor's sacred body. The court nobles were thrown into confusion and panic, each drawing their swords in haste.
