經基（つねもと）かぶら矢（や）
打（うち）つかひしばし
たもつて發（はな）ち玉ふ
矢坪（やつぼ）をたかへず
ひだりの耳根（みヽね）より
右（みぎ）の草分（くさわけ）まで矢（や）
しりしろく射（い）出（いだ）
したり鹿（しか）はたまらず
どふと落（おつ）れは堂上（どうしやう）堂下
ゐたり〳〵と称（ほむ）る声（こへ）し

現代語訳
【射られて倒れる牡鹿】
太刀を抜いて払おうとすると、牡鹿は庇の上に飛び上がり、鏡のような眼を開いて皇居を睨んでいた。經基が鏑矢を番え、しばらく狙いを定めてから放った。矢は的を外すことなく、左の耳の付け根から右の脇腹まで貫通し、矢尻が白く突き出た。鹿はたまらず、どっと倒れた。すると堂上・堂下の人々は「見事だ」と称賛する声がしばらく鳴り止まなかった。
英語訳

When they drew their swords to strike at it, the deer leaped up onto the eaves, opened its mirror-like eyes, and glared at the imperial palace. Tsunemoto nocked a whistling arrow, took careful aim for a moment, then released it. The arrow did not miss its mark, piercing through from the base of the left ear to the right flank, with the arrowhead protruding white on the other side. The deer could not endure it and fell with a thud. Then voices of praise from the courtiers above and below, exclaiming "Excellent!" continued without pause for some time.
