将門（まさかど）なり穴（あな）ふ
しぎや分限（ぶんげん）不（ふ）
相應（そうおう）の行粧（きやうそう）こ
そ意得（こころへ）て疑（うたかい）な
く逆心（きやくしん）の色（いろ）あ
らわれたりと殿下（てんか）
にまふし奉（たてまつ）り早（はや）
く誅伐（ちうばつ）あるべし
と再四（たび〳〵）申すヽめけれ
ども唯（たゞ）一 門中（もんなか）の不（ふ）
和（わ）より私（わたくし）の偏執（へんしう）なら

現代語訳
【将門に話しかける従者】
近くまで来てよく見ると小二郎将門であった。なんと不思議なことか、身分不相応の行装（華美な行列）をしているのは、きっと謀反の心の表れに違いない。これを殿下（帝や上皇）に申し上げ、早急に討伐すべきであると何度も進言したけれども、ただ一門内の不和から生じた私的な偏見であろうと、全く取り合ってもらえなかった。しかし後になってその言葉が正しかったと思い知らされることになった。

[A retainer speaks about Masakado]
When they came closer and looked carefully, it was Kojirō Masakado. How strange indeed! This ostentatious procession inappropriate to his station surely reveals his treasonous intentions. They should report this to His Majesty (the Emperor or Retired Emperor) and have him swiftly punished. Though they repeatedly urged this course of action, thinking it was merely private prejudice arising from discord within the clan, no one would listen to them at all. But later, they would realize how prescient these words had been.
