者（もの）の裾（きよ）をふまへ覆（うつぶし）に
たをすもあり或（あるい）は

今宵（こよい）褒貶（ほうへん）のうたあ
わせあつてまかるなんど
こと〴〵しくのヽしりてさ
まよひありくさてもいか
成うたをか詠（よみ）けん何事（なにこと）
をか云（いヽ）けんつたへ
聞（きく）さえ恥（はづ）かしヽいと

【倒れ伏すぶざまな荒夷】
横様に冠を引き立て、または前駆の者の裾を踏まえて俯せに倒れる者もあり、或いは何某の大納言のもとに「今宵褒貶の歌合わせがあって参るのです」などと、いかめしく騒ぎ立てて迷い歩いている。さても、いかなる歌を詠んだのか、何事を言ったのか、伝え聞くさえも恥ずかしい、実に見苦しい振る舞いよと、心ある人はみな眉をひそめ合ったのであった。

[The Rough Warriors Falling Down Clumsily]
Some pulled their caps sideways and fell forward on their faces, or stepped on the hems of their attendants' robes. Others would swagger about boastfully, saying things like "Tonight there is a poetry contest for praise and criticism at Lord So-and-so's residence, and I must attend." What kind of poems did they compose? What did they say? Even hearing about it secondhand was embarrassing—such unseemly behavior! All people of refinement frowned and shook their heads in disapproval.
