めくこと百千の雷（いかづち）の
一どにおちかゝるかと
あやしまる人々 肝（きも）を冷（ひや）し
魂（たましい）を飛（とば）しいかなる前表（ぜんひやう）
にやと悲（な）しまぬ
ものはなかりけり

【空に現れた怪異におびえる人々】
大空に長さ三十丈もあるだろうと思われる蛟（みずち）のような異形のものが二つ現れた。
その息は炎のようで、その鳴き声は百千の雷が一度に落ちかかるかのように轟くものであった。
これを見た人々は肝を冷やし、魂を飛ばし、いったいどのような前兆なのだろうかと悲しまない者はいなかった。
これはすなわち朝敵が蜂起するであろう兆しなのだと、恐ろしいことであった。

[People Terrified by Strange Apparitions in the Sky]
In the vast sky appeared two creatures of strange form, like water dragons (mizuchi), seeming to be thirty jō in length.
Their breath was like flames, and their cries thundered as if a hundred or thousand bolts of lightning were striking all at once.
The people who witnessed this were chilled to the bone and their souls took flight; there was no one who did not grieve, wondering what manner of portent this might be.
This was indeed a sign that enemies of the court would rise in rebellion—truly a terrifying omen.
