藤原（ふじわら）の純友（すみとも）は本國（ほんごく）伊豫（いよ）へ下（くだ）るとて
播州（ばんしう）室（むろ）の海上（かいじやう）にて風（かぜ）を見（み）合（あわせ）いた
りしが純友（すみとも）を始（はじ）め良從（らうじう）のこらず
船（ふね）にゆられ前後（ぜんご）もしらず寐（ね）
入たり爰（こゝ）に海賊（かいぞく）数（す）十人 商人（あきうど）
船（ふね）とやおもひけん屋形（やかた）の内（うち）へ入
きたり金銀（きんぎん）衣服（いふく）調度（ちやうど）まて
のこりなく奪（むば）ひ取（とり）おのが
ふねにはこひ入ゆくえもし

【純友の船を離れる海賊】
藤原純友は本国伊予へ下るため、播州室の海上で風待ちをしていた。純友をはじめ従者たちは皆、船に揺られて前後も分からずに寝入ってしまった。そこに海賊数十人が、商人の船だと思ったのか、屋形の中へ入ってきた。金銀、衣服、調度品まで残らず奪い取って、自分たちの船に運び入れ、どこへともなく去って行った。賊の首領らしき者がただ二人後に残り、純友が秘蔵していた「藤丸」という鎧があったのを奪い取ろうとして、誤ってうつ伏せに倒れてしまった。

[Pirates Departing from Sumitomo's Ship]
Fujiwara no Sumitomo was waiting for favorable winds on the sea off Muro in Banshū province while traveling down to his home province of Iyo. Sumitomo and all his retainers, rocked by the ship, fell fast asleep, unaware of their surroundings. At that moment, several dozen pirates entered the cabin, perhaps thinking it was a merchant vessel. They seized everything—gold, silver, clothing, and furnishings—loaded it all onto their own ship, and departed to parts unknown. Only two men who appeared to be the pirate leaders remained behind, attempting to steal a suit of armor called "Fujimaru" that Sumitomo had treasured, but one of them stumbled and fell face-down.
