純友（すみとも）は本國（ほんごく）に歸（かへり）てより
晝夜（ちうや）隠謀（いんぼう）の企（くわたて）に心（こころ）を
くるしめけるが吃（きつ）とを
をひ出し彼（かの）船中（せんちう）にて
生捕（いけどり）し海賊（かいそく）を庭上（ていしやう）に引（ひき）
出（いた）し面（おもて）を和（やわ）らせて申けるは
平 親王（しんわう）将門（まさかと）東国（とうごく）にて義兵（きへい）
を揚（あげ）られ威勢（いせい）関（くわん）八州（はつしう）に普（あまね）
し我（われ）この君（きみ）にたのまれま
ゐらせ當國（とうごく）にて旗上（はたあげ）せん

純友は本国に帰ってから、昼夜を問わず陰謀を企てることに心を悩ませていたが、ふと思いついて、あの船中で生け捕りにした海賊を庭上に引き出し、顔を和らげて申すには、
「平親王将門が東国で義兵を挙げられ、その威勢は関八州に広く知れ渡っている。私はこの君に頼まれ申し上げ、当国で旗揚げをしようと思う。お前たちが将来の富貴を望むなら、仲間を招き集めて軍功を尽くすべきである。親王からお下しになられる令旨を謹んで拝見せよ」
英語訳
[Pirates brought out to the garden]
After Sumitomo returned to his home province, he had been troubling his mind day and night with plotting conspiracies, but suddenly having an idea, he brought out to the garden the pirates he had captured alive on that ship, softened his expression and said:
"Prince Taira Masakado has raised righteous troops in the eastern provinces, and his power is widely known throughout the eight Kantō provinces. I have been entrusted by this lord and intend to raise my banner in this province. If you wish for future wealth and honor, you should gather your companions and devote yourselves to military service. Respectfully observe the imperial edict bestowed by the Prince."
