御厨（みくりや）三郎 打負（うちまけ）てはう〳〵帰（かへ）り
ければ将門（まさかど）大きに驚（おどろき）いまは
みづから討（うつ）べしと二万五千
余騎の大軍（たいぐん）を卒（そつ）し常陸（ひたち）
の国へ発向（はつこう）す國香（くにか）は此（この）よし
つたへきゝ一 族（ぞく）等をあつめ
軍（いくさ）の評定（ひやうしやう）せられけるに
今度（こんど）もまた道（みち）の切（せつ）
所（しよ）に討出（うちいで）て防（ふせく）べし
と定（さため）けるを繁盛（しげもり）

御厨三郎は敗北してほうほうの体で帰ってきたので、将門は大いに驚き、「今度は自分自身が討って出るべきだ」と二万五千余騎の大軍を率いて常陸の国へと向かった。国香はこの様子を伝え聞き、一族を集めて軍議を開いた。今度もまた道の要所に討って出て防ぐべきだと決めたところ、繁盛が進み出て申し上げるには、「このたびの勝利は敵の不意を討ったからです。今度は将門が大軍で攻めてきます。小勢をもってどうして討って出ることができましょうか。

Mikuriya Saburō returned in defeat, barely escaping with his life, so Masakado was greatly alarmed. "This time I myself must go out to fight," he declared, and led a great army of over 25,000 mounted warriors toward Hitachi Province. When Kunika heard news of this, he gathered his kinsmen and held a war council. They decided that this time too they should sally forth to defend at strategic points along the road, but Shigemori stepped forward and spoke: "Our recent victory came from striking the enemy when they were unprepared. This time Masakado is attacking with a large army. How can we sally forth with our small force?
