【もぬけのからの土浦城】
是非（ぜひ）もなき事ともなり
既（すで）に大将 討（うた）れたまひければ
我（われ）も〳〵と落行（おちゆき）て今（いま）は此（この）城（しろ）にて敵（てき）
にあたらんと叶（かのふ）まじく旗（はた）斗（はかり）を
櫓（やぐら）に結（ゆひ）つけ夜（よ）にまぎれて落行（をちゆき）
けり将門（まさかど）は大軍（たいぐん）を引卒（いんそつ）し押（おし）よせて鯨（とき）
の声（こへ）を揚（あげ）しかど城中（しやうちう）さらに音（をと）もせず

現代語訳
【もぬけの殻の土浦城】
もはやどうしようもないことになってしまった。すでに大将が討たれてしまったので、我も我もと逃げ落ちて、今はこの城で敵に立ち向かうことは叶わなくなった。旗だけを櫓に結びつけて、夜に紛れて落ち延びていった。将門は大軍を率いて押し寄せ、鬨の声を上げたが、城中は全く音もしない。寄せ手も容易に近づかず、城を取り囲んで様子を見ていた。安房国の住人で長狭七郎保時という者が、出し塀の下に立ち寄って見上げると、櫓の上の塀の隙間で鳥の羽ばたく音がしたので、やはりそうだ、人もいない空城なのだと思い、盾の板を梯子として塀の上にするすると登り、静かに城中を見回したところ、敵は一人もいなかった。そこで城戸を押し開いて味方の軍勢を招き入れると、大軍が城中に入って宿営した。

【The Empty Shell of Tsuchiura Castle】
The situation had become utterly hopeless. Since their general had already been killed, everyone fled one after another, and now it was impossible to face the enemy from this castle. They tied only flags to the watchtower and escaped under cover of night. Masakado led a great army and pressed forward, raising war cries, but there was no sound at all from within the castle. The attacking forces did not approach carelessly either, but surrounded the castle and observed the situation. A resident of Awa Province named Nagasa Shichirō Yasutoki approached the base of the outer fence and looked up. When he heard the sound of birds flapping their wings in the gaps of the fence above the watchtower, he thought, "Just as I suspected, this is an empty castle with no one in it." Using a shield board as a ladder, he climbed smoothly up onto the fence and quietly surveyed the interior of the castle. There was not a single enemy to be found. He then pushed open the castle gates and beckoned his allied forces, whereupon the great army entered the castle and made camp.
