さても将門（まさかど）は八万 余騎（よき）を引卒（いんそつ）し
箕田城（みたのしろ）へおしよせ四方（しほう）八面（はちめん）にとりまきて
食攻（じきせめ）にこそしたりける城中（しやうちう）是（これ）に
力盡（ちからつき）いまは快（こゝろよく）討死（うちしに）せばやと皆（みな）甲（かつ）
冑（ちう）を帯（たい）しさわぎける渡辺（わたなべ）
仕（つかふ）といふ士（し）夜廻（よまわ）りするとて
此ていを見てその故（ゆへ）を問（と）ふ

さて将門は八万余騎を率いて箕田城へ押し寄せ、四方八面に取り囲んで兵糧攻めにした。城中はこれに力尽き、今は潔く討死しようと皆が甲冑を身に着けて騒いでいた。渡辺仕という武士が夜回りをしていて、この様子を見てその理由を問うた。皆が答えて言うには「城中の兵糧が既に尽き、他に救いの軍勢もなく、このまま飢えて死ぬより、心よく討死して君恩に報いよう」と。仕ははらはらと涙を流し「有り難い皆々方の御志よ、それでは」

【Warriors Weeping While Resolving to Die Fighting in Service to Their Lord】
Now Masakado led over eighty thousand horsemen and pressed upon Mita Castle, surrounding it on all sides and subjecting it to a siege by starvation. The castle defenders, exhausted by this, resolved to die honorably in battle, and all donned their armor and helmets in commotion. A warrior named Watanabe Tsukau, who was making night rounds, saw this situation and asked the reason. Everyone answered, saying: "The provisions in the castle are already exhausted, and there are no relief forces from elsewhere. Rather than starve to death like this, we would prefer to die fighting with honor and repay our debt to our lord." Tsukau shed tears profusely and said, "What admirable resolve you all have! Well then..."
