我（わか）計（はかりこと）にて一先（ひとまつ）この城（しろ）
を落（おと）しまゐらせかさねて
計策（けいさく）をめぐらさんとて
城中（しやうちう）にかへり忠（ちう）のもの有
よしにて敵将（てきしやう）多治（たし）經明（つねあきら）
が方（かた）へ内通（ないつう）の書翰（しよかん）を贈（おく）
らせ火（ひ）を揚（あぐ）るを相図（あいづ）に
寄（よせ）給（たま）へ内應（ないおう）すべきと云遣（いゝつかは）し

現代語訳
【落涙の訳を問う渡辺仕】
我が策略によって一旦この城を落として差し上げ、重ねて計策を巡らそうとして、城中に帰り、忠義の者がいるという名目で、敵将多治経明の方へ内通の書簡を送らせ、「火を上げるのを合図に攻め寄せてください。内応いたします」と言い送った。大将を始めとして兵卒まで皆、笠印をかなぐり捨て、櫓々に火をつけて、五人七人と別れ別れになって、騒ぎに紛れて都を目指して落ち延びていった。寄せ手数万騎は「さあ合図の火を上げるぞ」と声々に鬨の声を上げ、我先にと攻め込んだけれど、敵は既に逃げ失せていて、ただ味方同士で討ち合いをするばかりであった。

【Watanabe Tsukau Asking the Reason for the Tears】
Through my stratagem, I shall first cause this castle to fall and then devise further plans. Returning to the castle, under the pretense that there were loyal retainers within, he sent a letter of secret communication to the enemy general Tashi Tsuneakira, saying: "When fire is raised as a signal, please attack. We shall support you from within." From the general down to the common soldiers, all cast away their hat insignia, set fire to the watchtowers, and splitting into groups of five and seven, they escaped toward the capital amidst the confusion. The attacking force of several tens of thousands of horsemen raised battle cries, shouting "Now the signal fire is being lit!" and rushed in, each trying to be first, but the enemy had already fled, leaving only allies fighting amongst themselves.
