爰（こゝ）に下野国（しもつけのくに）の押領使（おうりやうし）俵（たわら）藤（とう）
太（た）秀郷（ひでさと）といふものあり家（いへ）
冨（とみ）一 族（そく）廣（ひろ）ふして東（とう）
国（ごく）にかたをならぶる
ものなし去（さん）ぬる
承平（しやうへい）のはじめ近江（あふみ）
の国（くに）に住（すみ）しとき勢田（せた）の
はしを渡（わた）りけるに長（たけ）
二十 餘（よ）丈（ちやう）の大蛇（だいじや）橋（はし）の上（うへ）に
横（よこ）たはり伏（ふし）たり秀（ひで）
郷（さと）すこしも動（とう）ぜす大
蛇の背中（せなか）を荒（あら）らかに
ふみて過（すぎ）ゆきける

【勢田橋に住む大蛇の化身の女】
ここに下野国の押領使俵藤太秀郷という者がいた。家は富み、一族は広がって、東国で肩を並べる者はいなかった。去る承平の初め、近江国に住んでいた時、勢田の橋を渡ろうとしたところ、長さ二十余丈の大蛇が橋の上に横たわって伏していた。秀郷は少しも動じることなく、大蛇の背中を荒々しく踏んで通り過ぎていった。すると美しい女が一人現れ出て、「私はこの橋の下に住む者です」と言った。

【The Woman Who Was the Incarnation of a Great Serpent Living at Seta Bridge】
Here there was a man called Tawara Tōta Hidesato, the military governor (ōryōshi) of Shimotsuke Province. His house was wealthy, his clan extensive, and there was none in the eastern provinces who could match him. In the early years of the Shōhei era, when he was living in Ōmi Province, as he was crossing the Seta Bridge, a great serpent over twenty jō in length lay sprawled across the bridge. Hidesato showed not the slightest fear and roughly trampled across the serpent's back as he passed. Then a beautiful woman appeared and said, "I am one who dwells beneath this bridge."
