聞へける然とも尾州公注進之段尤なり去ながら
此方ゟ実否見届なき時は無念至極なり早速早
馬申付実否を見届￣ニ可参と仰にあつて御役人追〻支
度致されつゝ浅間ケ嶽の早打や其外京大阪は
云￣ニ及ばず伊勢路西国邊迄聞へし由皆物語を
記￣ス事にも五科の泥の深さを聞に御関所屋根
計り既￣ニ常楽寺￣ニ而も泥の来る由聞て等しく
先馬を扶んと客殿￣江率揚けれ共心見なく思ける
にや須弥檀へ率揚置て皆〻二階へかき上る跡ふ
り返りみればはや漫〻として須弥の上三尺
程￣ニ見ゆる馬は首計り出し三日生￣テ死たりけり
其内飼料せんとすれども水一滴求べき様
なかりければ是非もなし此寺と申は一躰水楊
故地形も凡六七尺築立椽も高く張￣リければ須
弥の上迄は二丈程の泥なるべし
一灰の毒にあたりにや小池小堀の人魚多く死する有
一利根川通夜之人魂光りもの夥しおや呼子をしたふ

現代語訳
（尾張藩からの）早打の馬、その他信州の御大名方も皆々注進してきたと聞いた。しかしながら、尾張公からの注進はもっともなことであるが、こちらからじかに事実を確認していないのでは残念極まりない。早速、早馬を手配して事実を見届けに参るべし、とのお言葉があり、御役人たちが次々と支度をされた。浅間岳の早打は、その他京・大坂はもちろんのこと、伊勢路・西国辺りまで知れ渡ったと、皆が語り合っていた。
また書き記すこととして、吾妻（五科）の泥の深さについて聞けば、御関所の屋根だけが（泥の上に）かろうじて見える状態であった。すでに常楽寺においても泥が押し寄せてきたと聞いて、（寺の者たちは）等しく馬を助けようと客殿へ引き上げたが、どうにもならないと思ったのか、須弥壇の上に引き上げておいて、皆々は二階へとよじ登った。後ろを振り返って見れば、もはや一面に泥が満ちており、須弥壇の上三尺ほどのところまで（泥が達し）、馬は首だけを出した状態で三日間生きてから死んでしまった。その間に飼料（えさ）を与えようとしても、水一滴も求める手立てがなかったので、どうしようもなかった。この寺は、もともと水楊（低湿地）であるため、地形もおよそ六、七尺ほど嵩上げして築かれており、縁も高く張ってあったので、須弥壇の上まではおよそ二丈ほどの泥があったものと思われる。

It was heard that express messengers on horseback arrived, as did reports from various lords of Shinano Province. However, while the report from the Lord of Owari was quite reasonable, it would be most regrettable not to verify the facts directly from our side. An order was given to immediately dispatch express horses to go and confirm the truth of the matter, and the officials proceeded to make their preparations one after another. It was said that news of the express dispatches from Mount Asama reached not only Kyoto and Osaka, but as far as the Ise road and the western provinces, and people everywhere were talking about it.
Among the things recorded here: upon hearing of the depth of the mud in Agatsuma (Goka), it was said that only the rooftop of the checkpoint (sekisho) was visible above the mud. Having heard that mud had already reached Jōrakuji temple as well, the people there equally tried to save the horses by bringing them into the guest hall, but perhaps thinking it hopeless, they hoisted them up onto the shumidan (altar platform) and everyone themselves scrambled up to the second floor. Looking back behind them, the mud had already spread everywhere, and it appeared to reach about three shaku above the shumidan. The horse, with only its head sticking out, survived for three days before dying. During that time, though they tried to feed it, there was no way to obtain even a single drop of water, so there was nothing to be done. This temple was originally built on low, marshy ground (suiyō), and so the site had been built up about six or seven shaku, with the veranda set high as well; therefore the mud must have been approximately two jō deep up to the level of the shumidan.
