という人の家も二階の下まで、川岸通りは庇（へい）の上に乗るものもあり、その者たちは二階住まいとなっていた。畑の上のくぼんだ場所は一丈三尺、泥が届かなかった前は池のように水が（流れ）、その泥というのは石が九分、材木が五割、土が五割ほどと見え、なかなか唐鍬でも掘ることが難しいと見えた。その中に火石が所々に一間・二間ほどの大きさの様々な色の石があり、柳の木が数多く枯れていた。まず見聞きした所では、所々を歩き回ることも困難な様子であった。刀祢川（利根川）の川筋には大石があって、通船が甚だ不自由になり、仁田より上流へは高瀬舟が全く通れず、ただ艀（はしけ）だけがかろうじて通用するのみであった。加州松平肥前守様が東海道をお下りになるとのことで、これは中山道が不通となったためにこのようになったとのことである。

...and the house of a person called [Tomouemon] was flooded up to the lower part of the second floor; along the riverbank road, some people were climbing onto the tops of fences (walls), and those people were living on their second floors. In the sunken areas above the fields, the mud reached a depth of one jō and three shaku (approximately 4 meters). Before the mud arrived, it had been like a pond with water flowing. The mud appeared to consist of about nine parts stone, five parts timber, and five parts soil, and it seemed very difficult to dig even with a mattock (唐鍬, tōgue). Among the debris, there were fire-stones (volcanic rocks) here and there, some one to two ken (approximately 2–4 meters) in size, of various colors; and numerous willow trees had withered and died. In the areas I first surveyed, it appeared difficult to traverse many places. In the channel of the Tone River, there were large boulders that made boat passage extremely difficult; upstream from Nitta, high-瀬 (takase) boats could not pass at all, and only flat-bottomed boats (lighters) could barely manage. It was reported that Lord Matsudaira Hizen-no-kami of Kaga Province was traveling down the Tōkaidō highway, as the Nakasendō highway had become impassable.
