現代語訳

行って見れば、まことに水が一滴もない。肝も消えるほど驚いた。そこでつくづく考えるに、この焼けた砂がこのような状態であれば、いかなる大きな災難が起こるか予測しがたい。榛名大権現がこの湖水をもって雨を降らせ、万民をお救いくださるのだと悟った。誠に尊く敬うべきことだとして、急いで郷内へ帰り、一郷で相談をまとめ、榛名山へ代参を以て申し上げるには、「この度の大変事は全く当山の神徳によって、命に関わるところを助かったのは、ひとえに満行大権現のご加護によるものである。これにより、今より毎月十五日には代参をもって、権田(村)がある限りはご礼を申し上げる」とて、八月十五日に代参が登山し、拝礼したとのことである。 一、牧の者五、六人連れ立って七月六日に榛名山へ参詣し、心願怠りなく拝し奉り、不思議に思って後へ立ち戻ろうとすれば、たちまち足が軽くなり、また(山を)出ようとすれば進みがたい。どうしようもなく、連れの人々に向かって「この訳ゆえ、今夜は当御山に止宿し、明けたならば早々に帰るべきだ」とて、ただ一人御山に立ち帰り泊まった。明けて七日、浅間(山)が焼け荒れ砂がすでに麓の上まで降ってくると聞き、逗留した。明けて八日に御山を出て故郷へ帰って見れば、親・妻子・家・郷の屋敷・牛馬・鶏・犬・猫の類に至るまで、残らず泥に押し流されてしまっていた。彼と連れ立って行った者は一人もなく、皆流れ失せてしまっていた。茫然として、また御山に立ち帰り、その次第を語って言うには、「里人は皆流れ失せ、村中で我ただ一人残った。これは全く満行大権現のご救いによる神徳であり、心魂に徹するものがある」と語るも、恐れ多いことである。さて――

They went to see for themselves, and indeed there was not a single drop of water. They were so astonished it was as though their very souls had dissolved. Pondering the matter deeply, they concluded that if the volcanic sand had reduced things to such a state, it was impossible to predict what great calamities might yet come. They realized that the Great Deity Haruna (Haruna Daigongen) must have used this lake to bring rain and save all people. Declaring this to be truly a matter of the utmost reverence, they hurried back to their village, held a communal council, and sent a representative pilgrim to Haruna Mountain to convey the following: "That we were saved from this great disaster, which could well have cost us our lives, is entirely due to the divine virtue of this mountain and the blessed protection of Mangyo Daigongen. From this day forth, on the fifteenth day of every month, we shall send a representative pilgrim to offer our gratitude for as long as the village of Gonda exists." And so, on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a representative pilgrim climbed the mountain and paid their respects. In another account: Five or six people from the pasture lands set out together on the sixth day of the seventh month to worship at Haruna Mountain. Having prayed devoutly and without fail, they thought it strange that when they tried to turn back, their feet suddenly felt light, yet when they tried to leave (the mountain), they found it difficult to proceed. Having no choice, one person turned to the group and said, "For this reason, let us lodge at this sacred mountain tonight, and return home at first light." That one person alone returned to stay at the mountain for the night. On the morning of the seventh, hearing that Asama had erupted and that ash and sand were already falling as far as the foothills, they remained. On the morning of the eighth, they left the mountain and returned home, only to find that their parents, wives and children, homes, estates, livestock—cattle, horses, chickens, dogs, cats, and all manner of creatures—had been completely swallowed up by the mud without exception. Not one of the companions who had traveled together remained; all had been swept away and lost. Standing dumbfounded, the survivor returned once more to the mountain and recounted what had happened, saying: "All the villagers have been swept away; I alone remain in the entire village. This is entirely due to the divine saving grace of Mangyo Daigongen—it penetrates to the very depths of one's soul." Even to speak of it is a matter inspiring awe. And then——
