常陸の国に塩焼きの文太という者がいた。心正しく夫婦で塩作りに励んでいた。
小塩という娘を持っていた。この子は貧しい者の娘であったが、心優しく歌の道を学び、春秋の花鳥風月を友としていた。

In the province of Hitachi, there lived a salt maker named Bunta. He was honest-hearted and worked diligently at salt-making with his wife.
They had a daughter named Oshio. Though this child was the daughter of poor people, she was kind-hearted and studied the way of poetry, taking the flowers, birds, wind, and moon of spring and autumn as her companions.
