現代語訳
下総の大宮司は小塩のことを聞き、いかにも塩らしい（慎ましやかな）者だと思ったので、嫁にしようと文太を呼んでその旨を述べたが、娘が聞き入れないとのことであった。
【大宮司】
なに、そちが受けようか。
また、ねじかね婆という、この家に譜代の老女がいたが、この件は私にお任せくださいと言った。
【大宮司】
首尾よくすると褒美が出るぞ。
【ねじかね婆】
私がうまく取り計らってみましょう。
【塩汲みの男】
婆様、目が要らざる（余計な）思い入れを使うぞ。
婆殿の手際にも、あの子が承知申すまい。
塩焼きの浜の大宮司と申すのは、下総一番の塩屋で、上下おびただしい暮らしぶりなり。
英語訳
The head priest (Daiguji) of Shimousa heard about Oshio and thought she was indeed a modest and proper person, so he summoned Bunta to tell him he wanted her as his bride. However, his daughter would not consent to this.
【Daiguji】
What, will you accept this proposal?
There was also an old woman named Nejikane-baba, a hereditary retainer of this household, who said to leave this matter to her.
【Daiguji】
If you succeed, there will be a reward.

I shall skillfully arrange this matter.
【Salt-drawing man】
Old woman, you're getting too emotionally involved where you shouldn't.
Even with the old lady's cunning, that child will never agree.
The Daiguji of the salt-making beach is the foremost salt producer in Shimousa, living in tremendous luxury with many retainers.
