さまに書とり師直（もろなを）高貞（たかさだ）の事を十一 回（くわい）につゝりたるさうしなそら言（ごと）
といへどもすこしも戯言（げげん）をもちひずめつらしきよみ本なり

此書は指向（しゆこう）を鬼話（はけものばなし）に根（もとづ）き語各（ごろ）を傀儡（あやつり）棚に倣（なら）ひ専（もつぱら）顐話（おかしみ）を
主意（はつめい）としたる院本（しばいぼん）にして一たび巻（まき）kしらけば忽（たちま）ち絶倒（せつたう）して噴（ふき）
飯（いだす）の珍書（ちんしよ）なり且（かつ）ところ〳〵に画をくわへこと〴〵く国字（ひらかな）を以（もつて）
しるしたれば児女（じぢよ）にも至極（しごく）よみやすかるべし
意馬（いば）六塵（ろくぢん）の街（ちまた）に馳（はせ）ては馬士（むまかた）の力（ちから）に止（とゝま）らす心猿（しんゑん）
五欲（ごよく）の枝（ゑだ）に飛（とん）では猿曳（さるひき）の手（て）に及（およば）す万境（まんきやう）に
移（うつ）りて迷（まよ）ふ人（ひと）の心（こゝろ）は向（むか）ふの辻番（つじばん）て聞（きい）ても正路（しやうろ）に出（いづ）る
事（こと）難（かた）ければ釈尊（しやくそん）種（しゆ）〳〵に狂言（けうけん）をかき観音薩埵（くわんおんさつた）の
早替（はやかわ）りを勤（つとめ）て□（あまね）く衆生（しゆじやう）を利益（りやく）し給ふ夫（それ）□起向（しゆこう）の

様式で書き取り、師直・高貞の事を十一回に綴った草子で、作り話
とはいえども少しも戯言を用いず、珍しい読み物です

この書は趣向を化け物話に基づき、語り口を人形浄瑠璃の舞台に倣い、専ら面白さを
主眼としたる芝居本で、一度読めばたちまち大笑いして吹き出す
珍書です。また所々に絵を加え、すべてひらがなで
記したので子供や女性にも大変読みやすいでしょう
意馬が六塵の街を駆けては馬方の力では止まらず、心猿が
五欲の枝に飛んでは猿引きの手には及ばず、あらゆる境遇に
移り迷う人の心は向こうの辻番で聞いても正道に出ることが
難しいので、釈尊は種々に狂言を書き、観音菩薩の
早替わりを務めて広く衆生を利益されます。それゆえ趣向の
種として綴り上げたこの草子も善を勧め
悪を懲らしめる一助ともなろうかと

This book bases its plot on monster tales, follows the narrative style of puppet theater, and is primarily intended for entertainment. It is a rare book that will immediately cause readers to burst into laughter and spit out their food. Moreover, illustrations are added throughout, and everything is written in hiragana, making it very easy for children and women to read.
When the horse of intention gallops through the streets of the six dusts, it cannot be stopped by a groom's strength; when the monkey of the mind leaps among the branches of the five desires, it is beyond a monkey trainer's control. The human heart that wanders lost through myriad circumstances cannot easily find the right path even when asking at the checkpoint ahead. Therefore, the Buddha wrote various kyōgen plays and performed the quick costume changes of Kannon Bodhisattva to benefit all sentient beings widely. Thus, this booklet, compiled as material for such purposes, may also serve as an aid to encourage good and punish evil.
