現代語訳
平二はもともと貧乏で、あるとき日雇いの棚賃の溜まりと掛け合いに責められて難儀していたが、女房の人魚がその毒を思い、仕返しにこの金を稼ごうと思ったけれども、人間並みでさえご存知の世の中、五文の工面もできない。さすが竜宮生まれゆえ見世物という近道に気がつかず、とつおつと思案して、
「ああ、そうだ。私は卑しい人魚だけれども、夫を思う念力はどうして梅ヶ枝（遊女）に劣るだろうか。あちらは手重い三百両、こちらはわずか七八両。ただ目録量といっても、ありそうなもの。折節手桶鉢もなければ、魚に縁のあるメダカ鉢で間に合わせよう」
と思い込んだ人魚の一念は我を忘れ、すでにひしゃくを取ろうとしたが、肝心の手がなければ大いに都合が悪い。しばし迷うその時、思いがけず後ろから誰か知らず「その手はここに」とひしゃくを持ち添え振り上げたのは、凄まじいことであったという。
程にこそなけれ、むだらしかったという次第である。

Heiji was originally poor, and at one time was troubled by demands from creditors over accumulated daily wages and shop rent. His wife, the mermaid, thought of using her poison to get revenge and earn money, but even for ordinary humans in this world as you know, it's impossible to scrape together even five mon. Being born in the Dragon Palace, she didn't realize that becoming a spectacle was a shortcut.
After much deliberation, she thought: "Ah, that's it! Though I am a lowly mermaid, how could my devotion to my husband be inferior to that of Umegae (a courtesan)? Her patron spends three hundred ryō, while ours is only seven or eight ryō. Even if it's just a nominal amount, it should be possible. Since there's no proper water basin at hand, I'll make do with a goldfish bowl, which is fitting for a fish."
With this single-minded determination, the mermaid forgot herself and tried to take up a ladle, but without hands, this was greatly inconvenient. As she hesitated, unexpectedly from behind, someone unknown said "The hands are here!" and helped her hold and raise the ladle - this was truly terrifying.
Such was the foolish course of events.
