現代語訳
さて、ひしゃくを振り上げると同時に、ばらばらと小判や小粒が降りかかったが、人魚は「ああ、ありがたや」と口では言うものの、手がないので金を拾うことができず、悔しがって着物をもんでいた。
この後ろから手を貸した男は、大磯の女郎屋「舞鶴屋」の亭主で伝三という者である。最初からものかげでこの様子を見ていたが、珍しいしろものゆえ、人魚を抱えようと思い立ち、ここに現れたのである。
♪されども体は魚のことなれば、潰しの値打ちは首ばかり。池の踏み（値段）にて年一杯を決まりの首代七両二分で抱える。
♪人魚は亭主の留守に相談を決めて、金に添えて書き置きを残そうと思ったけれども、これまた手がないのでどうしようもない。前に富十郎が演じた「道成寺」を聞き及び、口筆にてさらさらとは書かず、ぶつぶつと書く。

♪いや、このように書くのは上手だ。こいつは恐れ入った。まことの人魚だ。筆達者だ。
英語訳
Now, as soon as the ladle was raised up, small gold coins and silver pieces scattered down. The mermaid said "Ah, how grateful!" but having no hands, she could not pick up the money and frustratedly wrung her kimono.
The man who lent his hands from behind was the proprietor of the brothel "Maizuru-ya" in Ōiso, named Denzō. He had been watching this scene from the shadows from the beginning, and thinking to employ this rare creature, he stepped forward.
♪However, since her body is that of a fish, her value when broken down is only in her head. At the pond rate, he employs her for a full year at the standard head price of seven ryō and two bu.
♪The mermaid decided to leave a consultation note along with money during the proprietor's absence, but again having no hands, she was at a loss. Having heard of Tomijūrō's performance of "Dōjōji," she doesn't write smoothly with mouth-writing, but writes in a halting manner.
