まじめなる
口上
まつもつてわたくしみせの儀おの〳〵様ごひゐきあつく
日ましはんしやう仕ありがたき仕合そんし奉り候
扨作者京伝申候はたゞ今までかりそめに
つたなき戯さく仕り御らんに入候へとも
かやうのむゑきの事に日月および
筆をついやし候事さりとは
たはけのいたり殊に去春なぞは世の中に
あしきひやうぎをうけ候事ふかく
これらをはぢ候て当年よりけつして
戯作相やめ可申とわたくし方へもかたく
ことはり申候へ共さやうにては御ひいきあつき
わたくし見世きうにすいに相成候事ゆへぜひ〳〵
当年ばかりは作いたしくれとやう相たのい候へは
京伝も久しきちいんのわたくしゆへにもたしかたく

口上
まず最初に、私どもの店の件につきまして、皆々様にひいきを厚くしていただき、日増しに商売が繁盛しており、ありがたい幸せと存じ上げております。
さて、作者の京伝が申しますには、「今まで軽い気持ちでつたない戯作を作り、ご覧いただいておりましたが、このような無益なことに年月を費やし、筆を使っていることは、まことに愚かなことの極みです。特に去年の春などは、世間から悪い評判を受けることがあり、深くこれらを恥じて、今年からは決して戯作をやめると申します」と、私どもの方へも固く約束いたしました。
しかし、そのようでは、ひいきをいただいている私どもの店が急に困ってしまうことになりますので、ぜひとも今年だけは作品を作ってくれるようにと頼みましたところ、京伝も長いお付き合いの私どもゆえに仕方なく、存外にも心を曲げて作ってくれることになりました。
すなわち、洒落本および絵草子の新版ができましたので、お好みの方様は、まず目録をご覧の上、お求めくださいますよう、ひとえにお願い申し上げます。以上。

First and foremost, regarding the matter of our shop, we are deeply grateful that all of you have shown us such generous patronage, and our business prospers more each day - truly a fortunate circumstance for which we humbly give thanks.
Now, the author Kyōden states: "Until now, I have casually created poor works of popular fiction for your viewing pleasure, but spending months and years on such unprofitable matters, wasting my writing brush on them, is truly the height of foolishness. Particularly last spring, when I received harsh criticism from society, I deeply felt shame over these matters and firmly promised to completely cease writing popular fiction from this year forward" - he made this solemn pledge to us as well.
However, if that were to happen, our shop, which depends on your generous patronage, would suddenly find itself in dire straits. Therefore, we earnestly requested that he create works for just this year at least. Since Kyōden has had a long relationship with us, he reluctantly agreed, bending his principles against his better judgment to create works for us.
Thus, new editions of sharebon (witty books) and ezōshi (illustrated books) have been completed. We humbly request that those who appreciate such works first examine our catalog and then make their purchases. That is all.
