現代語訳
鴨長明の『方丈記』に「行く河の流れは絶えずして、しかも元の水にあらず。淀みに浮かぶ泡沫は、かつ消えかつ結びて、久しく留まることなし」とあるのは、昔の建暦年間の言葉であるが、寛政の今に至っても、五分ほども違いなくよく当てはまった。嘘ではない。
新地も再び元の流れとなることは、淵が瀬となり瀬が淵となり、覗きからくりが変わるよりも早く、これと定めがたいのが今日の浮世の有様である。ああ、それはよい。こう理屈臭く言うのではなかった。
さて、右の通り昨日まで人間界の霊場であった中洲も、今日は忽ち竜宮の芝居所となったので、まず波を踏み固めるため、竜王よりの御許可で見世物・芝居・水茶屋・遊戯場などを設営し、新地であった時の賑わいに少しも劣らない繁盛ぶりである。

海馬の曲乗り、飛魚の綱渡り、蛤が蜃気楼を吹く見世物、蛸の八人芸など、様々色々な趣向を出して銭を稼ごうとひしめく欲心は、水の底まで同じことである。
河豚ばかり集めて切り見世ができるそうな。俺も少し鉄砲を放しに行くぞ。
蜃気楼というのは蝋燭の見世物じゃないか。
英語訳
In Kamo no Chōmei's "Hōjōki" (An Account of My Hut), it says: "The flowing river never ceases, yet the water is never the same. Foam that floats upon pools now vanishes, now forms, never lingering long." This was written in the old Kenryaku era, but even now in the Kansei period, it applies perfectly without even five percent difference. This is no lie.
The new pleasure quarters also return to their original flow - pools become rapids and rapids become pools, changing faster than peep shows change their displays. Such is the state of today's floating world, impossible to pin down. Well, that's fine. I didn't mean to sound so pedantic.
Now then, as described above, the Nakasu district, which until yesterday was a sacred realm of human affairs, has today suddenly become the theater of the Dragon Palace. So first, to firm up the waves, with permission from the Dragon King, they have set up sideshows, theaters, tea houses, and amusement venues. The prosperity rivals that of when it was a pleasure quarter.
