現代語訳
世の中の俗物どもは針ほどの事も棒ほどに言い、棒ほどの事も柱ほどに言うが、人情ある釣船の平次が人魚を連れ帰った事を誰が言うともなく、釣船の平次は品川沖で疫病神に魚を振る舞い、その恩を報いるために言ったのは、
「この後、釣船平次宿と書いた札を貼っておくべし。そうすれば疫病は決してこの家へは入るまじ」と言い教えて別れたということを世間では言い出し、札を書いてもらおうと大勢が平次の家へ詰めかけたので、平次は大いに手を焼いた。
♪「平次様、下さい。お札を下さい。」
♪平次は頭を打ち振って「いやいや、それは嘘事というものの、皆々、根っから初めから承知せず。」
【ここより中巻】
一匹の犬が狂って吠えると万匹の犬が静かに従うと仏経にも言うように、我も我もと押しかけて疫病除けの札を乞うたので、平次も困り果て、人魚を女房にしたことばかりでは格好がつかず打ち明けても言われず、仕方なく疫病神の分にしてしまったのもおかしかった。
♪さて平次は人魚を女房にして、夜の語らいに二親に捨てられた訳を聞くと、だんだん不憫さが増し、見物料を取って見世物にしようなどと相談にくれども、平次は欲に離れて承知せず、人魚を労った。
♪平次は人魚が何を食うものか知らざりしが、ようやく問い出し、赤飯を取って来て食わせる。これは人魚と金魚の間違いなり。
「わたしゃそんなものは嫌。落雁が良いよ。」とは、さすが鯉の子の食べ物の好みなり。
英語訳
The vulgar people of this world exaggerate needle-sized matters to the size of sticks, and stick-sized matters to the size of pillars. But regarding the compassionate fishing boat Heiji bringing home the mermaid, someone spread the word that fishing boat Heiji had treated the plague god to fish at Shinagawa offshore, and in return for that favor, the god had said:
"Hereafter, you should hang up a sign reading 'Fishing boat Heiji's lodging.' Then the plague will never enter this house," and with this teaching they parted. When this story spread among the people, crowds flocked to Heiji's house wanting him to write protective charms for them, causing Heiji great trouble.
♪ "Master Heiji, please give us one! Please give us a charm!"
♪ Heiji shook his head saying, "No, no, that's a lie," but everyone refused to listen from the very beginning.
【From here begins the middle volume】
Just as the Buddhist scriptures say that when one dog barks madly, ten thousand dogs follow quietly, people came pushing forward one after another begging for plague-prevention charms. Heiji was at his wit's end - he couldn't very well explain just that he had taken a mermaid as his wife, and even if he revealed the truth no one would believe him, so he had no choice but to go along with the plague god story, which was quite amusing.
♪ Now Heiji had made the mermaid his wife, and during their evening conversations when he heard about how she was abandoned by her parents, his pity for her grew more and more. Though some suggested they could charge admission and make her a sideshow attraction, Heiji, free from greed, would not agree and instead took good care of the mermaid.
♪ Heiji didn't know what mermaids ate, but when he finally asked and brought her red bean rice, this was a confusion between mermaids and goldfish.
"I don't like such things. Sweet rice crackers would be good," she said - truly showing the food preferences of a carp's offspring.
