有って砂の降方御見分被成村長をめして仰あり
しは男女ともに諸作に手をいれ種はかりも失ざる
こそ専一也糸絹をやめ出情いたし可然と仰にした
かひみな〳〵畑へ出成丈情出しけれ共大小豆はみな
うちたふれ粟稗は砂に而うつみ用立物なし
芋はのこらす葉を打落しくき斗にて作ハ壱面ニ
埋み平らに成中々情力にも及かたく見へけれは中
には迚も斯ては此国の住居覚束なし後に国
役にて御扶普請なし被下し也外国へ立退ける
やもはかり難き内身を労して開発も無益
なり抔いへるも有り又芋種はかりも残し侍らん
と芋の根の砂を右左りへかきわけ手をいれし也
其比日毎にけふり深く曇りてすゝしく度々雨
もふりければはやく手入しけるひとは芋は三四寸五分
位にもとりけるなりしかれとも北筋砂ふり厚き
ところは種さへもなき村々多し田方は水かけ置
しかるへしと仰られしゆへ一通り水かけ置けれは根
はり生出かくては半石もあらんとよろこひ侍れと
二百十日過て穂に出ぬれはみな青立とやらんにて
種をうしのふ者多し扨又信州追分沓掛

代官所や旗本領分は江戸表へ訴え申し上げた。早速九日には小幡領分では御見分のお手分けで御出役があって、砂の降り方を御見分なされ、村長を呼んで仰せがあったのは、男女ともに諸作物に手を入れ、種だけでも失わないことが肝要である。糸絹作りをやめて、精を出すのがよろしいと仰せになった。
それに従い皆々畑へ出て、できる限り精を出したけれども、大豆小豆は皆打ち倒れ、粟稗は砂に埋もれて用をなさない。芋は残らず葉を打ち落とされ茎ばかりで、作物は一面に埋もれて平らになり、到底人力では及ばないように見えたので、中には「とてもこうしては、この国に住み続けることは覚束ない。後に国役で御扶持普請なしに下されるなら他国へ立ち退こう」
「やもしれない。身を労して開発しても無益である」などと言う者もあった。また「芋の種だけでも残そう」と芋の根の砂を左右へかき分けて手を入れる者もあった。その頃は日毎に煙が深く曇って涼しく、度々雨も降ったので、早く手入れした人は芋を三寸四分五分位も収穫できた。しかしながら北筋で砂の降り積もりが厚い所では、種さえもない村々が多かった。
田の方は水をかけ置くのがよろしいと仰せられたので、一通り水をかけ置いたところ、根張りが生え出て「これでは半石もあろう」と喜んでいたが、二百十日を過ぎて穂に出ると、皆青立ちという病気で種を失う者が多かった。さて又信州追分宿掛では

The deputy magistrate offices and hatamoto domains petitioned Edo. Promptly on the 9th day, there was an official inspection mission dispatched to the Obata domain territory to assess the ash fall. The village headmen were summoned and told that it was essential for both men and women to tend to their crops and preserve at least the seeds. They were instructed to cease silk production and devote their efforts to agriculture.
Following these orders, everyone went out to the fields and worked as hard as they could, but the soybeans and azuki beans had all fallen over, and the millet and barnyard grass were buried in ash and rendered useless. The sweet potato plants had all their leaves knocked off, leaving only stems, and the crops were completely buried and flattened. It seemed beyond human capability to remedy, so some said, "It's impossible to continue living in this province under these conditions. If the provincial government doesn't provide relief construction later, we should relocate to other provinces."
"This may be inevitable. It's pointless to labor on land development," some said. Others declared, "Let's at least save the sweet potato seeds," and dug through the ash around the potato roots with their hands. During this period, smoke clouded the sky daily, making it cool, and it rained frequently. Those who tended their fields early were able to harvest sweet potatoes of about three to four and a half inches.
