King You of Zhou brought about the decline of Zhou's virtue on account of Bao Si; Duke Xian of Jin killed Crown Prince Shen Sheng on account of Li Ji, and that disaster extended for five generations. Taira no Kiyomori, out of his love for Tokiwa, spared the children of Yoshitomo and kept them alive, and in the end had his dominion taken from him. Nitta Yoshisada, captivated by a court lady (naishi), had the realm effectively seized from his grasp twice by Takauji. Ariwara no Nakatarō (Narihira) and Hikaru Genji have had their names passed down through the ages — and all of these are due to the same reason. What is the cause of all this? Whether old or young, gifted or foolish, the one thing by which people are most easily led astray is this very matter. It is something one must take great care to guard against.

*If the hearts of people in this world are deeply given to sensual desire, evil things will surely come to pass.*

There is a teaching that says: the poor should not try to give gifts to others using wealth they do not have, and the old should not try to serve others by relying on physical strength they no longer possess. It is just like the saying: if you load too much onto an emaciated horse, the horse will immediately collapse; if you pile too much cargo onto a small boat, the boat will overturn on the spot. One must simply know one's own proper station and measure. For those who do not know their own measure, their actions will surely result in nothing but unfortunate outcomes.

*Actions in this world that do not befit a person — these, one cannot help but feel, will lead to nothing good.*
