Even for those whose lives are filled with the seven treasures and ten thousand riches, not being able to do as one pleases is the way of this difficult world. How much more so for those who lack what they need — there will inevitably be shortcomings that cannot be done without. If one truly understands in one's heart what is sufficient for each person according to their station, what suffering need there be? Though one may say they do not understand this principle, to truly not understand it is to be like stone and wood. "Stone and wood" is a metaphor for one who has no heart. "A person is not stone or wood — they must have feelings," as it is written in the *Hakushi Monjū* (Collected Works of Bai Juyi).

Living
in this world,
there will always be
things that are lacking —
to say nothing of them
is to be
like stone and wood
indeed.

The punishment of the gods and the principle of Buddhist cause and effect follow one as a shadow follows a form, and are as immediate as an echo answering a sound. Therefore, how could one who kills the lives of living creatures expect their own life to be long? It is said: "If I harm others, then others will also harm me." When we speak here of wishing to live long, it is not about forcibly twisting reason to beg for long life, nor is it about seeking what lies beyond heavenly fate — for "life and death rest in one's destiny." Rather, when one cuts short the life of living things through wicked deeds, the retribution comes swiftly, and one will perish without even enjoying one's natural lifespan. This is the principle being explained here.
**Lower Section (Poem)**
If in this world
you wish your life
to be long,
do not kill
any living
creature.
