**Right Page** **Upper Section** In learning any art or discipline, one must steel one's resolve and commit to study with the determination to rise above all others. Without such intent, there is no chance of truly establishing oneself in that path. Since Mount Fuji is a renowned mountain without equal in the three countries, it is invoked here as a metaphor: when practicing any art, one should aspire to a fame that reaches even across the three countries — such is the level of ambition one ought to cultivate. Those who gathered fireflies to study by their light, and those who read texts by the reflection of snow — the examples of people from both past and present who achieved fame are all in keeping with the spirit of this poem. Without setting one's resolve, such a name will not remain in the world. **Lower Section (Poem)** In this world, it is through practicing the arts that one becomes something — raise your name to the heights of Fuji's peak, you people of this world. --- **Left Page** **Upper Section** The previous poem spoke of the act of learning, while this poem speaks of what follows once that learning has reached fulfillment. In the words of Han Tuizhi (Han Yu): "There is no one skilled in an art who goes unused." Even a person of noble birth and fine lineage, if they are ignorant and without ability, will be looked down upon by others. On the other hand, one who possesses the virtue of art and accomplishment will be prized and employed beyond what their station alone would warrant — the difference between these two is as great as that between clouds and mud. For this reason, from childhood onward, one must never be negligent in learning the various arts and disciplines. **Lower Section (Poem)** If you have both talent and wisdom, and skill and learning as well, you will be prized beyond your station — bear this in mind, O people of this world.
