**Right Page** **Upper Section** Human beings are the foremost of all living things, endowed with the Five Relationships and the Five Virtues. To know shame and to hold compassion in one's heart — this is the very path of what it means to be human. And yet, those who follow the vulgar saying that "if you take shame to heart, you will spend your whole life being shamed" are truly beyond all pity and reproach. Animals do not know the principle of shame, yet a cat knows how to subdue a mouse, and a dog knows how to guard the gate. A person who does not know shame is thus lower even than these beasts, who at least understand their proper role — and that is a most wretched thing indeed. For this reason, one must illuminate the path of learning, come to know shame, and uphold the way that is proper to a human being. This is the admonition conveyed here. **Lower Section (Poem)** Those in this world who do not even think to feel ashamed before others — they are even more wretched than the beasts. --- **Left Page** **Upper Section** As the common saying goes, "a stake that sticks out gets its head struck" — in all things, if one stands out from the common run of people, trouble will inevitably arise. That Qu Yuan sank into the Miluo River was itself a misfortune brought about by his vessel being unlike that of ordinary men. If one simply conducts oneself, in ordinary life, in a manner befitting the common person — not exceeding proper bounds even in matters of appearance or dress, and living in accordance with one's station — then naturally, one's fellowship and social intercourse will be pleasant to behold, and one will pass one's entire life in contentment and without any particular difficulty. **Lower Section (Poem)** In this world, it is simply in all things being as others are that one ought to aim for — for that, to any eye, is the better way.
