**Right Page** **Upper Section** In the present age, if one were to tell a person who lacks the capacity for it to "become a sage or a man of wisdom," or to "observe the five hundred precepts," or to "practice the discipline of forbearance," or to tell a person of meager means to "build halls, pagodas, and temples" — such demands would be impossible to fulfill. The proper course is simply to encourage each person, according to their own capacity and station, to follow the paths of Shinto, Confucianism, and Buddhism as best they can, without straying from those ways. **Lower Section (Poem)** What cannot be done — in this world no amount of effort will make it so. What can be done — let us at least not stray from that path. --- **Left Page** **Upper Section** There are those who, unaware of their own foolishness and of the limits that fate has placed upon them, pray for offices and stipends beyond their station, and seek wealth and rank exceeding what is proper for them. They make grand vows toward these ends, and when those wishes go unfulfilled, they complain that "there are no gods or buddhas" — speaking unreasonably, saying whatever they please. It is precisely such people who create a world into which neither gods nor buddhas can enter. Such lawless persons are the very sort of whom the sage said, "A wall of dung and filth is not worth plastering" — they are beneath discussion entirely. There are indeed profound reasons why prayers to the divine can meet with a response, but I shall set that matter aside for now. Speaking to what is most essential: it all depends upon whether true sincerity is present or not. Where there is true sincerity, it is as a bright mirror gathering light — a clarity without blemish — and one may savor that state of being deeply. **Lower Section (Poem)** If one says "I will not rely even on prayer" and speaks unreasonably — that is a world in which neither gods nor buddhas have any place.
