[Right folio]
[Upper section]
There is a proverb that says, "Rather than asking your master, ask your friend." This is in keeping with the idea of the "three beneficial friends" (*ekisha sanyu*). There are seven types of people who are not good to have as friends: first, a person of high and noble rank; second, a young person; third, a person who is free of illness and physically strong; fourth, a person who is fond of drink; fifth, a person who remonstrates too fiercely; sixth, a person who tells falsehoods; seventh, a person of deep greed. There are three kinds of good friends: first, a friend who gives you things; second, a physician; third, a person of wisdom — so Kenkō too has recorded. Even matters one cannot confide to one's parents or siblings, one can speak of to a trusted, intimate friend, and likewise be admonished by them.
[Lower section]
One who has
found good
friends
in this world —
how admirable
and impressive
they seem!
(*To have good friends in this world is a truly impressive and enviable thing.*)

[Upper section]
Whatever the vessel or implement may be — even if one cannot clearly see the damage with the eye — there is never a case where it is not eventually spoiled through use. Therefore, one must not handle another's things carelessly and without regard. This too is a lesson in chastising oneself. Bearing this in mind, when someone comes to borrow something from you, not only should you refrain from lending it, but you must also take care not to say things that mock or ridicule the person. In the sworn pledge (*kishō*) of the Venerable Genshin, it is also stated: "One must not borrow and use the belongings of others. Even between close acquaintances, if something has been borrowed, it must be returned promptly."
[Lower section]
Another's things
are things
one damages —
by and large,
if only
you can
manage it,
do not borrow
in this world.
(*Borrowed things are things you end up damaging. As a general rule in this world: if you can possibly avoid it, do not borrow from others.*)
