地（ち）の利（り）といふ品（しな）〳〵は。地形（ぢかた）よく。城（しろ）険阻（けんそ）
にして。石（いし）かきたかく。塀（へい）矢倉（やぐら）けつかうに。
堀（ほり）などもふかく。いく重（え）もほり。弓（ゆみ）鉄炮（てつはう）。其（その）
外（ほか）武具（ぶぐ）馬具（ばぐ）たくさんに。兵粮（ひやうらう）もみち〳〵。
水の手（て）までもつきぬをいふ。此 地（ち）の利（り）にて
たゝかへ共。諸卒（しよそつ）の心へだ〳〵にて。終（つい）には
城（しろ）をすて。落（おち）てゆき降参（かうさん）をするもあり。

……者であっても、道を曲げ、諸人の迷惑を顧みず、利欲の道を己の利益とし、将を万民に疎まれさせるような者は切腹させ、万民を豊かで安楽にし、鰥寡孤独（夫を亡くした妻・妻を亡くした夫・親のない子・子のない老人）にまで心を配り、飢えや寒さに苦しむ非人（身分の低い者）も出ないようにして、とにかく「この君主でなければ」と世の人々に思われ、敵国の内からも、こちらへ寝返る者が出るようにして、その後もし戦うことになれば、負けることはないであろう。
七 天の時をもって戦う者がいる。天の時とは、日の選び方、時の選び方、方角を取り、四季・陰陽を最優先として……

……敵城を取り囲み、これを攻めるが落とすことができず、日を空費して、膠着状態が長引くことになる。しかし、天の時も地の利には及ばない。地の利というものの種々は、地形がよく、城が険しく、石垣が高く、塀・矢倉（櫓）が堅固で、堀なども深く、幾重にも堀を巡らし、弓・鉄砲、その他の武具・馬具も豊富に揃い、兵糧も満ち満ちており、水の手（水源・飲料水の確保）も尽きることのないことをいう。この地の利をもって戦うとしても、諸兵卒の心がばらばらであれば、ついには城を捨て、逃げ去り、降参するものも出てくる。

…Even if such a person happens to hold a position of standing, if they bend the proper way, disregard the hardship and inconvenience caused to the people at large, make the pursuit of personal gain and greed their guiding principle, and cause the commander to be despised by the people — such a person should be made to commit ritual suicide (seppuku). Make the people prosperous and at ease; extend compassion even to the widowed, the widowers, the orphaned, and the elderly without children; ensure that there is not a single wretched soul suffering from hunger and cold; in every way, make it so that the people of the realm think to themselves, "There is no lord but this one" — and even from within enemy territory, bring about a situation where people defect and pledge their loyalty to your side. If one then goes to war after all this has been accomplished, defeat shall never come.

…They surround the enemy castle and attack it, yet cannot bring it down; days are wasted in vain, and the stalemate drags on for a long time. However, the Opportune Moment of Heaven cannot match the Advantages of Terrain (chi no ri). The various elements of the Advantages of Terrain are as follows: favorable topography; a castle that is steep and difficult to approach; stone walls that are high; walls and watchtowers that are well-constructed and sturdy; moats that are deep and layered in multiple rings; an abundance of bows, firearms, and all manner of weapons and horse equipment; provisions that are fully stocked; and a water supply that never runs dry. And yet, even when fighting with all these Advantages of Terrain on one's side, if the hearts of the soldiers are fragmented and divided, in the end some will abandon the castle, flee, and surrender.
