これで（地の利によっても）勝つことができないのは、地の利もまた人の和には及ばないからである。さて、人の和というものは、道を道として正しく行い、罪なき人の死を許容せず、人の苦難を解消し、人の憂いや急場を救い、民と喜びをともにし、君主のために命を捧げることを、露ほども惜しまないと思えるように、人を愛し、慈悲の心が深く、助けることが多いのは、天理（天の道理）を体得していることによる。道を失い、助けることが少なければ、縁者・親類など親しく深い間柄の者でさえもこれに背く。助けが広く行き渡ることの極みにおいては、万民が……

The reason one cannot achieve victory even with these Advantages of Terrain is that the Advantages of Terrain, too, cannot match the Harmony of the People (jin no wa). Now, the Harmony of the People means this: to practice the Way as the Way truly demands; to not permit the death of those who are innocent; to resolve the hardships of others; to rescue people from their sorrows and urgent crises; to share in the joys of the people; and to inspire in one's soldiers a spirit whereby they offer up their very lives to their lord without begrudging even a drop of dew. To love others deeply, to be profound in compassion, and to be generous in extending aid — this comes from having attained the principle of Heaven (tenri).
