……将たる者が忘れてはならないのは、天理と王道政治である。国をよく治めることなく、万民に疎まれていながら、敵国と戦うとき、必ず負けないということはない。その場で負けるくらいならば、なぜ敵国に従わないでいられようか。合戦とは、これ勝てると知ってから戦うものである。仁者は弓を射る者のようなものである。弓を射る者は、まず己の姿勢を正してから矢を放つ。手元が崩れていなければ、誤ることなく的に当たるはずである。いかに的に当てたいと思っても、手元が正しくなければ、外れることは目……

…What a person who would be a true commander must never forget are the principles of Heaven (tenri) and righteous governance (ōsei). If one governs one's country poorly, is despised by the people, and yet goes to war against an enemy state, there is no guarantee whatsoever of avoiding defeat. If one is going to be defeated on the spot anyway, why not simply submit to the enemy state? Battle is something one engages in only after knowing that victory is attainable. A benevolent person (jinsha) is like one who shoots a bow. The archer first corrects his own posture, and only then releases the arrow. If his form does not collapse, the arrow will strike without error. No matter how desperately one wishes to hit the mark, if one's form is not correct, missing the target is plain for all to see…
