**第七 合図の旗の事**
▲先手に五本、中備えに五本、旗本に五本（の合図の旗を用意する）。そして、堀切には黒旗、茂みには青旗、沼には黄旗、川には白旗、敵が出た時には赤旗、と五色に合図を定めておく。先手よりそれぞれの色の旗を上げて中備えに知らせ、中備えも合図を上げて旗本へ知らせる。旗本も合図を受け、このように順次に応えるものである。

**第八 狼煙（のろし）を上げる事**

▲狼煙もいつでも用いられる一種の合図である。昼は煙で、夜は火の手で見る。狼の糞と艾（もぐさ）を合わせたものを用いる。この合わせ物によって煙がすぐに高く立ち上がる。旗本からよく見える山の尾根や高い地に、藁・あくた（籾殻や枯れ草などのくず）・薪を積み、右の合わせ物を入れて火をつけるのである。

**第九 細引きの事**
▲総勢の腰に、青細引きを一筋ずつ付けさせるものである。小屋掛け・川越え・城乗り、万事に用いる。

**Article Seven: Signal Flags**
▲ Five flags are assigned to the advance guard, five to the center formation (naka-sonae), and five to the bannermen (hatamoto). The signal colors are established as follows: a black flag for moats and ditches (horikiri); a blue flag for thickets (shigemi); a yellow flag for marshes (numa); a white flag for rivers (kawa); and a red flag when the enemy appears (teki-de). These five colors are established as signals in advance. The advance guard raises the appropriate colored flag to inform the center formation, the center formation in turn raises its signal flag to inform the bannermen, the bannermen receive the signal, and in this way each unit responds in succession down the line.

**Article Eight: Raising Signal Fires (Noroshi)**

▲ Signal fires (noroshi) are likewise a form of signal that can be used at any time. During the day, they are observed by their smoke; at night, by the light of their flames. Wolf dung and moxa (mogusa) are combined together. With this mixture, the smoke rises swiftly and to a great height. On a mountain ridge or elevated ground that is clearly visible from the bannermen's position, one piles straw, chaff and dry brush, and firewood, then places the above mixture within it and sets it alight.

**Article Nine: Rope Cords (Hoso-biki)**
▲ Every soldier in the entire force shall have one length of blue cord (ao-hoso-biki) attached to their waist. It is used for setting up shelters, crossing rivers, scaling castle walls, and all manner of tasks.
