**第十 黒鍬の事**
▲将たる人は、鍬を黒塗りにして、五百丁も千挺も調えておくものである。進軍前方の道を造り、また小屋取り・仕寄など万事に用いる。道行きには足軽三人に、黒鍬の人足一人ずつを相渡す（割り当てる）と言われている。

はその奉行が行儀（進み方・作法）を指示する。また五人のうち用事があって脇へ行く者があれば、その者の弓・鉄炮を右の奉行が持つ。その者が戻った時には（奉行が）相渡す。さて鉄炮を撃たせる時には、この奉行が薬込め（装填）の手伝いをする。万事によい（方法である）。

**Article Ten: Black-Lacquered Hoes (Kurokawa)**
▲ A commander should prepare five hundred or even one thousand hoes lacquered black, and keep them in readiness. They are used for building roads ahead of an advancing force, as well as for constructing shelters (koya-dori), for siege approach works (shiyori), and for all manner of tasks. It is said that during a march, one black-hoe laborer (kurokawa no ninsoku) should be assigned to every three foot soldiers (ashigaru).

**Article Eleven: Five-Man Units of Archers and Gunners**
▲ One officer (bugyō) shall be assigned to every five archers and gunners. During a march,

that officer shall instruct the men in proper conduct and deportment. Furthermore, if any of the five men has an errand and must step aside from the march, the officer shall carry that man's bow or firearm. When the man returns, the officer shall hand it back to him. When the order is given to fire the guns, this officer shall assist with the powder and shot loading (kusuri-gomi). This arrangement is advantageous in all respects.

**Article Twelve: One-Night Encampment**
▲ Shelters should be erected as lightly and simply as possible. It is best to set them up in such a way that they can be easily taken down and struck the following day. In places where the army will be billeted for two or three days, however, it is essential to take great care and construct the shelters solidly.
