ことはりなり。をよそ諸将は民（たみ）の頭（かしら）なり。人
の心苦（しんく）を身にうけ。周公（しうこう）孔子（こうし）の跡（あと）をたづね

【右丁】
これは道理（ことわり）なことである。およそ諸将とは、民の頭（かしら）である。人々の苦労・苦心を我が身に受け止め、周公・孔子の跡を尋ね、（人々を）多く助ける道を得て、国民を愛する役人である、と一日中（二六時中）このことを心に銘じ、（その徳が）音もなく香りもなく、自然とあまねく行き渡ってこそ、（武の）道としての本来の意図（本意）といえるのである。
右は古来の軍法より取捨選択して抜き書きし、
上聞（主君のお耳）に達し奉るべき旨、
上意（主君のご意向）により、かくのごとし。以上。

右のこの七冊は、秀吉公より近江中納言秀次公へ
進じ遺わすべき旨にて、
竹中半兵衛に仰せ付けられ、書き記したところの
反古（ほご）（草稿・下書き）である。貴殿がしきりにご所望のゆえ、
是非もなく写し遣わし候。他言なさるまじく（他言無用）。
かつ、半兵衛の短才（才能の乏しさ）が露顕することは、気の毒に候。
恐惶謹言。

This is only natural. In general, commanders (generals) are the leaders of the people. Receiving upon themselves the hardships and sufferings of others, following in the footsteps of the Duke of Zhou and Confucius, attaining a path of great benevolence and assistance, and serving as officials who cherish and love the people of the realm — keeping this thought in mind at every moment of every day, and allowing one's virtue to spread silently and imperceptibly, like something without sound or scent — this, truly, is the original intent and spirit of the Way.
The foregoing is a selection of passages extracted from ancient military law (gunpō),
to be respectfully brought to the attention of our lord,
and has been set down in this manner in accordance with his lordship's wishes.
Thus ends this document.

upon the instructions of Lord Hideyoshi, with the intention
that they be transmitted as a gift to
the Middle Counselor of Ōmi, Lord Hidetsugu.
These are the rough drafts (hogo) thereof.
As Your Lordship has repeatedly and earnestly requested them,
I have had no choice but to make copies and send them to you.
Please do not speak of this to others.
Furthermore, it would be most regrettable if Hanbei's
limited talents were thereby exposed.
