（前ページより続き）に臨んで思い立つのは不覚（失策）というものである。老馬の故事などはつまらないことで、誰でも知っている。内々に人を抱えておくにあたって、六十余州の者を一国につき一人ずつ置くといっても、わずかな人数に過ぎない。足軽程度の者を召し置くとして、二人ずつ置いても百二、三十人にしかならない。そのような時は、抱え置いたその国の者に道案内をさせるべきである。
《第十八》野伏せのこと
▲山の陰や茂った林など不安な箇所では、物見（斥候）を遣わして様子を見定め、鉄砲を撃ちかけて伏兵を追い散らすか、あるいは全軍が通り過ぎるまで、騎馬二、三人に弓・

《第十九》難所・細道を切り返して進むこと
▲山々に足軽を五、六人ずつ遠見（遠望の物見）として上げ、伏兵を警戒しながら進むものである。また弓・鉄砲の部隊に騎馬を混ぜ交ぜながら進ませるべきである。伏兵は必ず弓・鉄砲（の部隊）をやり過ごし、後方から仕掛けてくるものである。このような時に不覚（不意打ち）を取られないようにするためである。

The story of the old horse (who knows the way home) is a trivial matter known to everyone. When it comes to quietly retaining men in service, even placing one person from each of the sixty-odd provinces amounts to only a small number. If one were to place men of the rank of foot soldiers (ashigaru), keeping two per province would still total only around one hundred twenty or thirty men. In such cases, one should have the retainer from that particular province serve as a guide.

《Section Nineteen》 On Advancing Through Difficult Passes and Narrow Roads with Rearguard Vigilance
▲ Five or six foot soldiers should be posted to each of the surrounding hills as lookouts for a distant view, and the army should advance while remaining vigilant against ambushes. Additionally, mounted warriors should be interspersed among the archers and gunners as the column moves forward. Ambushing forces will invariably let the archers and gunners pass and then strike from the rear. This is a precaution against being caught off guard in such circumstances.
