[Right folio] The edge of a large mountain; terrain where mountains extend in all directions; burial grounds should generally be avoided, though this ultimately depends on the terrain. Land where a large pond lies above the encampment site should also be judged according to the terrain. However, if there is a means to prevent the enemy from breaching the embankment, such a location could in turn serve as a defensive advantage for one's own forces. 【Article 3】Concerning taking up position in mountain terrain ▲At a mountain pass, the commander's banners, curtains, and horse insignia should be displayed, and capable senior retainers should be stationed there. The commander himself should encamp at a point roughly eight-tenths of the way down the mountain, on the side facing the enemy. For the vanguard, second formation, third formation, and flanking spear units, troop dispositions should be made carefully; at each ridge tip and spur of the mountain, one must assess the natural constraints of the terrain. Any thickets at the foot of the mountain should be cut away, while thickets favorable to one's own side should be left standing, and concealed forces placed within them. All dispositions should be made after a thorough survey of the terrain. When positioning troops in thickets, the enemy will invariably be on their guard. In any case, the most important thing is to ensure that the thickets are not exploited to the enemy's advantage. [Left folio] 【Article 4】Concerning terrain well-suited for encampment ▲One should identify a location where the surrounding terrain is not excessively mountainous, where the front is protected by a shallow, wadeable river or similar feature, and the ground rises slightly above it — and where firewood, grass for fodder, and drinking water can all be freely obtained.
