国（くに）の仕置（しをき）も。いづれをよしといひがたく。たけ
くらべのさほうにて。敵（てき）をうたん事。いにしへ
よりなき道（みち）なり。夜討（ようち）辻（つじ）ぎりいろ〳〵の悪（あく）人。
ぬす人も同前（とうぜん）なり。此（この）盗（ぬす）人も。人のたからを
とらんために人をころす。さて乱戦（らんせん）をこのむ
も。人の国（くに）をとらんとて敵（てき）を討（うつ）なり。これや賊（ぞく）
将（しやう）とも賤将（ざんしやう）ともいふなり。夜討（ようち）辻（つじ）ぎりの悪（あく）
人は。人二三人ならではころさじ。乱（らん）をもち
い国をあらそふ時は。敵（てき）味方（みかた）死（し）する者（もの）数（かず）
をしらず。それ国土（こくど）は五穀（ごこく）をじやうじ。

そのやしなふ所の国土（こくど）をあらそひ。人をこ
ろさんや。をよそ敵将（てきしやう）を討（うつ）て。其（その）国（くに）の万民（ばんみん）
よろこはゞこそ討（うつ）べし。同じ仕置（しをき）の人 其（その）
国（くに）をとるに。なじかはよろこぶべし。敵将（てきしやう）の

……（敵）国の仕置きも、いずれを善しとも言いがたく、（まるで）背比べのような有様で、敵を討とうとすることは、古来よりあってはならない道理である。夜討ち、辻斬り、様々な悪人や盗人も同様である。この盗人も、人の宝を奪わんがために人を殺す。さて、乱戦を好む者も、人の国を奪おうとして敵を討つのである。これを賊将とも賤将とも言うのである。夜討ち・辻斬りの悪人は、せいぜい二、三人を殺すにすぎない。しかし乱（戦乱）を引き起こして国を争うときは、敵・味方ともに死する者の数は計り知れない。そもそも国土とは五穀を生じさせ、

Night raids, street killings, all manner of villains, and thieves are the same in this regard. The thief, too, kills people in order to steal their treasures. Likewise, those who delight in chaotic warfare attack the enemy in order to seize another's land. Such commanders are called "bandit generals" (zoku-shō) or "base generals" (zan-shō). A night raider or street killer will kill no more than two or three people. But when disorder is unleashed and nations are contested in war, the number of dead on both sides, friend and foe alike, becomes beyond reckoning. Only when an enemy commander's great wickedness has caused the people of that land to suffer and grieve with nowhere to turn — and those people have been waiting and longing for one's own commander to become their lord — and when that lord arrives, they feel as if they have come back to life, rejoicing and crying out "Long live our lord!
